Re: Egg Man or Robotnik?
It'll always be Robotnik to me no matter what Sega says and it's their own fault for programming me that way.
It's sort of rectified in my mind by the explanation given in the original Sonic Adventure where Ivo Robotnik is his real name and Eggman is just a nickname. I can live with that.

Re: Egg Man or Robotnik?
It could be looked at several ways, for one, let's make sure everyone know how did SEGA market it around the world.
Let's face it, English isn't the strength for most Japanese companies, you can spot hilarious translations throughout the years from the beginnings of videogames. And I do agree that Egg Man, thou its official for Japan and East Asian region (FYI, I did live in Taiwan for a good part of the 90's) doesn't sound appealing for an English speaking audience (heck, wasn't a villain for the cheesy 60's TV Batman named Egghead?).
Remember, the North American division does have to make decisions that will suit their potential costumers versus maintaining an "official" name from Japan. It is the same thing with Japanese car makers, as you will have different names from both sides of the Pacific Ocean.
I am surprise that no one has brought up the name changes for Street Fighter II from JP to the rest of the world, as Barlog was originally M. Bison (probably to avoid legal trouble), Vega was Barlog, and M. Bision was Vega.

Needless to say, I use the correct names for Street Fighter characters. >_>skyknight wrote: I am surprise that no one has brought up the name changes for Street Fighter II from JP to the rest of the world, as Barlog was originally M. Actually, that's a good example of why wantonly changing names in a localization is bad. At international fighting game tournaments and message boards, they now have to refer to these characters as "Boxer" and "Dictator" etc., or with cumbersome x/y combinations (Bison/Vega) so that everyone knows exactly which characters are being discussed.skyknight wrote:I am surprise that no one has brought up the name changes for Street Fighter II from JP to the rest of the world, as Barlog was originally M. In Capcom's defense I don't think they ever imagined their game was going to be some kind of international sensation or how the internet was going to take off.flamepanther wrote:Actually, that's a good example of why wantonly changing names in a localization is bad. And, to my knowledge, they did avoid that lawsuit they were worried about!Gunstar Green wrote:

That just goes to show that you never know when a seemingly harmless localization change will backfire massively years later, doesn't it? Wouldn't it be better to just avoid as many changes as possible?Gunstar Green wrote:In Capcom's defense I don't think they ever imagined their game was going to be some kind of international sensation or how the internet was going to take off.
