But particles of that corrosion do as well as the contaminants that caused the corrosion in the first place.
Which are cleaned off with contact cleaner. There shouldn't be any moisture left on that affected metal pit/corroded part.

What probably caused it was someone blowing on there/touching it or cleaned it with some ammonia from windex. Believe it or not, sweat/blowing acts like an acid on the gold platting. I still stand that rust/corrosion does not spread by contact, but environment.

Fun fact, if something is corroded, the corrosion in and of itself prevents that part from getting damaged any further on that spot.

I use
91% Isopropyl Alcohol
Q-tips
Tooth Brush
Fiber Glass Pen
Gloves

I use powder free, Latex or Latex Free Gloves, when ever I do any repairs for game systems or game cartridges.
The Fiber Glass Pen is used to clean any small amount of corrosion.
Alcohol and Tooth Brush to give it a good scrub and the Q-Tips are used in more delicate or detail parts.
PSone, Xbox, PS2, DC, SS Mod Service, PM for details

Indeed, aluminum especially forms a stable layer of dull corrosion that seals and protects the rest.

It's because the corroded parts have already bonded with enough oxygen that the molecules are no longer in need of more electrons to become stable, and won't form any new covalent bonds. Yay high school chemistry!
