With the way that Sega has been pimping their old stuff and re-releasing everything 15 thousand times, I think you may be 100% right.

a new 2d console sonic will sell tons.
As much as I and many others would love to see this, I don't think it would sell well at a retail price. Even if they priced it at $30, which I think is the lowest I've ever seen a PS3/360 game's MSRP on release, a lot of people aren't going to see the value in a very old school game like this. It is a much easier sell for them to release it at $10 or whatever as a download. Like I said, I would kill to own it on disc, but they have to do what they think will make them the most money.

And I realize that NSMB Wii sold an ungodly amount, but I have a hunch that a sonic game, if done in true old school style, just wouldn't have the same mass appeal. I really hope I'm wrong though, because i want to actually *own* a copy of this game.

The physics look kinda screwy in the gameplay video.

Actually, that explains a lot. Like why Sonic isn't battling astro pirates with his ninja arts or turning into a dinosaur.

Hmm, I don't like this. It'll probably reek of fan wank. /Yahtzee

These are the same guys who did Sonic Rush, which was pretty decent, though some of the stage design relied a bit too much on bottomless pits that punished you for going fast.

Dimps made Sonic Advance, which was far more deserving of being called a Sonic than anything else past Sonic 3.

Never played Sonic Advance 2 or anything past that. From what I hear, I didn't miss much, as Dimps did something unforgivable - they started listening to the fans.

Now, in most franchises, listening to the fans is a good thing. However, the current Sonic fandom has become so accustomed to crap, that they actually crave it. They crave it with all their hearts. They desperately want to play Sonic the Vampire Pirate & The Quest For The Leprechaun's Gold.
