Suuureeeee, just play Mario 64 and Mario Sunshine first.
Galaxy was good but it's plenty of faults and even more due to the innovative yet still clunky waggle motion interface.

I didn't play more than about 4 hours of Mario Galaxy for much the same reason I didn't play more than about 7 hours of Twilight Princess (and only played one cup of Mario Kart Wii). After playing Mario 64 and Sunshine, it all feels very "Been there, done that", and in some cases, I felt it had been done better before.
Could just be me.

I have played (not very long) Super Mario 64 and thought it was pretty good, I never played Sunshine before. I played a couple minutes at GameStop a while back, it seemed pretty good. I got it used so If I dont like it, I'll take it back

Hey hey, I never said that
I thought it was the greatest. Just that many do.
IMO its 64 is still king with Galaxy a close second. I never found the waggle bad at all and I loved the gravity defying platforming more, but because Galaxy is so much easier 64 edged it out, despite 64's at times bad camera angles.
Sunshine was good too, but it felt to much like a rehash to me. They just stuck with the same 64 gameplay and added in a gimmicky water pack.

I got:
Sonic Rush, for NDS
New Super Mario Bros. Wii
$5
Money's kind of tight this year, so not too large a haul. At least I currently have $32 of free money right now.

Thats the 3d Mario franchise for you

I have to say that sunshine was the only one that i really enjoyed and finished with almost all the stars. Mind you when i got my gamecube i was on a nostalgia high from hearing all the hype over Mario galaxy and how it "tok the innovations on sunshine to a whole new level" or something like that

I feel like the only time nintendo ever really captured the explorable world of mario was in Mario World and Mario 64. The weakness of mario galaxy was that the hub that tied everything together felt pointless, since you had to go through a bunch of menus to pick your level. Mario 64's worlds felt like extensions of the castle and the map in mario world felt really big and had lots of secrets and branching paths. I hope everything is more connected in mario galaxy 2.
Oh, and the fact that you lose yoshi at the end of the level in NSMB Wii is extremely lame. What were they thinking?!
