Yeah, that was painful.
Yes, very painful I kept fast forwarding all the time from 180 to 220.

Beck is a great recommendation, I watched it recently very unique quality specially if you ever played in a band. Its a good watch in between series and the music is excellent.
Saikano is also great and the live action movie was well done.

First episode kicked in very well with an awesome death. Comparing it with older anime its not that dark.

Area 88 -
A decently animated OVA but its story hasn't aged so well. 8/10Akira -
Everyone knows this 9/10Dominion Tank Police -
A fun police drama that doesn't take itself seriously. Odd city architecture makes for an interesting atmosphere. 7/10Legend of Galactic Heroes -
A genuinely epic space opera that is the first and last of its kind. 10/10Armored Trooper VOTOMS -
A gritty (by 80s standards) mecha drama that has a bit of everything. Dated animation. 8/10A.D. Police Files -
A prequel of sorts to Bubblegum Crisis. Excellent entertainment. 9/10Bubblegum Crisis -
The poster child for cyberpunk anime. GREAT soundtrack. 9/10Grey Digital Target -
Yet to watchMegazone Part I & II -
Yet to watchMacross Saga aka Robotron -
Everyone knows this one also. Confusing timeline. 8/10 Patlabor -
A cosy mecha drama that puposefully doesn't have much in terms of action. 8/10Kishin Corps: Alien Defender Geo-Armor -
Yet to watchThe Irresponsible Captain Tylor -
Yet to watchLes Maîtres Du Temps -
Yet to watchHeavy Metal -
Need I say anything?
Battle Angel Alita -
Short, moving and bittersweet. Hopefully it won't be remade. 9/10Cybercity Oedo 808 -
Cyberpunk actioner with an entertaining story. 8/10Birth -
This was probably my first full-length anime movie. Doesn't hold up well. 6/10Barefoot Gen -
Controversial, gritty, moving. Take it as you will. 9/10Futureboy Conan (and much of Nippon Animation's works) -
Timeless classicsLupin III Castle of Cargilsto -
Possibly the best Lupin III movie, but haven't watched most of the others. 8/10Goshogun Time Estranger -
This is based on a rather average super-robot series, but the irony is that it supercedes it in every way. Smells strongly of retro goodness. 9/10Laputa Castle in the Sky -
Studio Ghibli = ClassicPrincess Mononoke -
Studio Ghibli = ClassicNausicaa of the Valley of the Wind -
Studio Ghibli = ClassicVampire Hunter D -
I'm not into vampires but this one is an entertaining romp. 7/10Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honnêamise -
Yet to watchAura Battler Dunbine -
Yet to watchSpace Pirate Captain Harlock -
OngoingGrave of the Fireflies -
Heartbreaking. 9/10Kiki's Delivery Service -
Studio Ghibli = ClassicMy Neighbor Totoro -
Studio Ghibli = ClassicI'd appreciate any "retro" anime and "mature cartoons" recommendations because I enjoy them immensely. Criteria? Anything before Ghost in the Shell and NGE. We did talk about the Gundams and I've tried a remake of one of the old series but didn't enjoy it. So, please no talk of remakes of Gundam. There's also Space Runaway Ideon and Galaxy Express 999.. Watched the first episode of Ideon but didn't like it at all.. Anyone here a fan of the latter?

Wow, it seems like a lot of you are just tossing out massive lists of Anime with little regard to the OPs preferences.
Also, I am very surprised no one has mentioned
Monster:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monster_(manga)A one line summary from wikipedia: The series follows Dr. Kenzo Tenma as he pursues a young psychopath/sociopath named Johan, whose life Tenma once saved.
Tenma has to battle with the idea that his decision to save this boy has come at the cost of the many victims of the boy. The story delves into the boys history and shows a lot of Tenma's reflection and the hard decisions he has to make to hopefully right his wrong. The boy's past and everything surrounding him is certainly dark and as you watch Tenma blame the events on his actions you can see the depression set in until he decides his course of action needs to change.
I actually have not finished the series. I got very far into it and got side-tracked with finals a few years ago in college. I have tried not to really give anything away and I also hope to start to rewatch it so I can catch the ending.
Among 7 pages of posts, I hope you see this one hashiriya1.

I actually made that post to avoid starting a new topic.. in effect the topic should have shifted to my request. I hope I discover new "retro" anime this way, because there's not much to go on on the web.. Most sites focus on more popular anime. I tend to avoid +90% of what's been released during the last ten years. There is such a thing as over-commercialisation

Monster has been on my ever growing list of things to watch since 2 years ago.
Recently finished watching Great Teacher Onizuka and its live action counterpart after, has a lot of fun with it.
Right now I'm in the middle of the Crest of the Stars/Banner of the Stars saga. I usually tend to only watch classics and once in a while tend to follow some of the newer ones like Code Geass.

Have you tried Boogiepop Phantom? If you didn't specifically request older anime, I'd say watch Baccano, which is only 3 years old.

Well, if it's retro anime you want, I've currently been on a quest to get as much Dirty Pair and Dirty Pair Flash as I can possibly find. Nothing deep, but it's fun to watch.
It's the kinda stuff I wish we had more of these days. We've got plenty of action, but it's all dark and depressing. We've got plenty of colorful and fun shows, but it's just watching cute girls as if they were kittens at a pet store.
I'd like stuff that has violence and explosions AND has the full gamut of colors and puts a smile on my face. I don't THINK that's asking for too much, but apparently it is.
More importantly, it's episodic. Not knocking story arcs, but with action shows, they go on for too damn long these days. I don't want to feel pressured into watching 18 episodes so I don't feel like I'm hanging. I'd rather just watch one complete episode so I don't have to spend too long in front of the electric smiles machine.

Hey Pulsar, have you ever seen Perfect Blue? I'd highly recommend it. It's one of those psychological thrillers, pretty dark too.

Surely you must love One Piece, then.

One Piece is both goofy and serious at the same time, but it's gotten a bit darker as of recently. Also, OP is anything but Episodic, which is another thing 7k mentioned.
EDIT: Slayers. All of it. Watch.

I'd love to get into One Piece, but it is FUCKING LONG AS ALL HELL!
There is NO WAY I can get into it! 445 Episodes? You have GOT to be shitting me!
That said, I have enjoyed the movies I've seen. You can enjoy them without watching the rest of the series, which is exactly what I want.
