I will be buying one when either White Knight Chronicles finally comes stateside, or FFXIII is released, so probably not until before the holiday season. I want it for RPGs! And Katamari...

Yep. I nearly bought a bluray player back in december, but it didn't come with an hdmi cable. The guy said the quality would be worthless without one (no idea if that's true) and proceeded to show me the $85 monster cables. I passed.

Don't pay more than a tenner for a HDMI cable. It's a digital cable! No matter what voodoo Monster say they add to their cables to make those 1's and 0's miraculously better is complete utter nonsense. A digital cable is a digital cable, if you are only hooking A/V equipment to your TV (which unless you have some crazy setup spanning several metres) you're not even going to get signal degradation.

Quoted for truth. Monster's continued success as a company only proves that there is no god.

I have heard of issues with certain HDMI cables and crackling when switching resolutions - anyone validate this?

I suppose if you bought a completely unshielded HDMI cable you would experience something like that. But a standard $10-15 cable from Monoprice wouldn't have any issues.

Never had a cable do that on me, even with a piece of shit HDMI that came bundled with a USB docking cradle + HDMI cable for the PS3 in a little bundle for 99p when Zavvi was shutting down.

Also, I just read that you can swap HDs, so there's no catch this time (only the lack of HDMI cable?).

First of all. . . not much shrinkage. At least not compared to how much the slim versions of ps1 and ps2 shrunk down from their originals.

Second. . . NO COMPONENT CABLES? Wtf? Has this always been the case with the ps3? No HDMI is one thing but a system that is based around an HD format doesn't come with a way to plug straight into an hdtv?

Well I definitely want a PS3, the choice is whether to get the $299 phat or the slim for the same price. Some people have concerns that it may have overheating issues, and others think it may have a higher failure rate. I only have the original PS2 and original PSX so I don't know how the slim versions are.

Any suggestions on which I should get? I guess the Uncharted 160 gig $399 bundle is also a option, though it doesn't seem like the best one.

Actually the most recent ones also have the matte finish.

No, they're still glossy black. I've had to tell enough customers that lately as everyone keeps thinking that new PS3's have a matte finish for some reason.
