As I mentioned, in the What Are You Watching thread, my wife and I recently started (finally) watching A Game of Thrones. So good! And after a few consecutive late night viewing marathons, so tired! So I'm in need of some auditory caffeine. It turns out that Amon Amarth pretty much captures the general spirit and tone of the show perfectly. One might argue that their music would be better suited to Vikings, and well ... I couldn't argue; but hey it works pretty well here too!

"Rude" is up there with tubtumping as one of the worst pop songs ever.

Ever.

The video and the lyrics...I have no idea where to start.

The lead "wakes up this morning" when it is clearly the afternoon, and "puts o his best suit", which is a t-shirt, a leather jacket, and skinny jeans. And then for some reason they try to, for reasons unknown to the unknown, play as a garage band.

It gets worse.

For those who are lucky enough to not have heard it, the song is:

Whiny Douche: Can I marry your daughter.

Dad: No. You're a whiny douche and she can do better than you.

Whiny Douche: Why you gotta be so ruuuuude?

Dad: Cause you are a whiny douche.

Whiny Douche: I'm going to marry her anyway!

Dad: See. You're being a whiny douche again. Why did you even ask me as you know you are a whiny douche?

And then we go to a scene of the lead singer who performs some of the best impersonations of what is now known as "Dad Dancing". I don't care if this comes across as racist, but seeing the lead dance is one of those moments that if you're hanging around some black dudes you feel ashamed to be white.

And not that white people can't dance (I'm a smooth criminal myself), but it is the epitome of white people dancing.

@luke this is why I watch parodies more than the originals there isn't much pop I can stand and usually the ones I can't stand the parodies/covers are 10x better

Been listening to a lot of the rock selection on my phone so:

Great White: Rock Me

(just one of the hundreds I've heard...though Gretchen Wilson - Under the Covers and Lita Ford - Bitch is back(live)(wording is odd because I want to keep it pg but dang she said it not me) is a great album. The lita ford one has a nice rendition of hate, and kiss me deadly both are two of my new favorites from her that I've heard with my music lately)
My gameroom

Listening to depressing Elliot Smith.

When I heard that the concept for Pale Emperor was essentially "Marilyn Manson sings the blues" I was skeptical. When I heard that the album had a new band member and song writer (Tyler Bates) and none of the old guard (Twiggy Ramirez, Ginger Fish, Madonna Wayne Gacy, etc.), I was even more worried.

When I heard the album would have the track he recorded for the intro to the TV show Salem, I began to feel a bit more optimistic. My wife and I relived a 90s style moment where we bought the new single in an actual CD store and rocked out to Deep Six and Third Day of a Seven Day Binge in our car in the parking lot. At this point, my excitement reached full tilt.

I've only now finished listening to the full album (with the 3 unplugged remakes) and I'm highly impressed with Manson's latest. Though Antichrist Superstar and Mechanical Animals remain my favorite, I was quite fond of his recent Born Villain album and I think I might like Pale Emperor even better than that, making this my favorite post-90s Manson album. I've often worried about Manson fading away and becoming the the desperate shock rocker The Onion claimed him to be in 2001. To the contrary, the new album is shocking not because Manson is such a religious iconoclast, but because Manson singing blues rock actually works so well. I didn't expect him to pull it off, but upon hearing the Pale Emperor, it makes perfect sense that the antichrist could find solid ground in bluesy guitars, bass, and drums. He's brought the devil back to rock and roll. Manson sounds more self-assured than he has in awhile and the songs bang strong with his aged and scream-torn vocals. He sounds grittier than ever when he howls, and though I miss Twiggy and the rest of the crew, Tyler Bates is a highly welcomed addition to the Manson family. His music is rugged and sexy. This is solid rock and roll with the kind of cocksure swagger it's supposed to have. Killer album.

I didn't know Tyler Bates was in the band now. Blues you say? I'm interested.

yeah, JT's thoughts echo my own about the album and Manson's catalog and presence in general. TPE is really very good, and his best since Holy Wood, I'd say.

I'll make it a priority. I remember years ago he did a live radio show where he did an acoustic performance of Timberlake's "What Goes Around," which made me think he would do really well over some more subdued tracks. This sounds interesting. More so, I like when artists reinvent themselves, or step outside of their comfort zone. This seems like it would really appeal to me.
