I don't think I like the NES Ninja Gaiden games. I get bored pretty fast.

Was thinking about this one today, but I'm also not too big on Contra. Though I can see myself running through some of those. I think I've maybe beaten one of them somewhere but I'm not sure... I'd like to tackle Contra, Super C, Contra 3 SNES, and Hard Corps. I almost want to say the original and Hard Corps are the ones I know the most, but I'm not sure.

But I think my preference is games with health bars. Mega Man, Castlevania, or like Sunsoft and other stuff is probably to blame. Enemy placement is more deliberate. Levels feel a bit more platformerish and adventureish. Contra feels very arcadey. Which isn't a bad thing, but not really my preference.

Ninja Gaiden though, I don't know. Someone convince me.

Xbox Ninja Gaiden 1 is one of my favorite action games of all time though.

You're not wrong, Contra is very arcade-y. I think the NES games are still the absolute best in the series. I'm the best at the first, good at the second, okay at the third, and not so hot at Hard Corps. Not sure I'm going to make that one of my challenge games, it might take some serious nerves of steel to make it through.

For the record, I used to not really like Contra at all. I preferred Mega Man quite a bit. But Contra is one of those games that seems to get better the more time you put into it. Maybe that will be the case if I ever beat Contra III on hard or beat Hard Corps at all...

Speaking of arcade experiences from Konami, Jackal is one of the absolute best examples of the overhead shooter genre. I used to not like that game, either!

Many people including myself have a lot of Nostalgia for TMNT NES that first game. If you really look at the game and think. The game is actually shit. Enemies not from TMNT. Exploit bosses. Levels that go nowhere but mandatory only to have you walk about out the same level only purpose it to pad. Items that are not attainable. very unbalanced. Good music and good graphics in an otherwise awful game.

I don't know, it's a weird game but I don't recall thinking it was terrible. Was thinking of taking another shot at it sometime soon. I don't know if I ever beat it back in the day.

Of course I liked the beat em' ups more. But most favor TMNT 2, whereas I liked TMNT 3 the best. But it was a late NES game so I think a lot of people missed out on it.

The original TMNT is a legitimate bad game.

It is cheap, mean and unfair. No way to get extra lives. You only get two continues. Your health doesn't come back between stages. 3 Turtles are actually useful, one must be saved for bosses, so you only have two guys throughout the game. The final leg of the game is damn tough. And you have no cheats/passwords.

As a kid, I had a huge nostalgia for the game and the show. However, as an adult who likes to play, enjoy and beat video games, the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is a bad game.

Swimming in the Dam level is actually easy compared to some of the later stages.

That perfectly sums up the game for me too. I still have it though, part due to it being gifted to me by my now passed uncle, the other part because I like classic TMNT but if I play one it's going to be 2-4(NES/SNES) these days.

It's by no means a terrible game, it's just very badly designed because it demands perfection almost to enjoy it and makes getting to that level as prohibitive as possible in all the wrong ways.

If you like health bars and very deliberate enemy placements, Ninja Gaiden should be right up your alley. It has both of those things.

NES Ninja Gaiden is just flat excellent. While re spawning is a trait of many NES games and a little cheap I dare say most deaths in the NES games is the players fault. It's a very deliberate series. It's difficult because of 3 factors. Enemy re spawn, enemy placement and knock back. The game is still mostly just a true test of skill. TMNT is just cheap as hell. It's difficult for a laundry list of reasons..wait no. Ninja Gaiden is very difficult which is cool. TMNT is just flat cheap. Cheap and difficult are not the same thing.

I don't think TMNT is bad, because mechanically it plays pretty well. But it's definitely a spiteful game, which brings it down rather significantly.

Ninja Gaiden can sometimes feel similar, but it's difficult for better reasons. The games were designed to have a "flow" to them that makes them a little more fair than the contrived difficulty in TMNT.
