Because then it would cost $387. The DVD Consortium (now known as the "DVD Forum") that controls the patents and software licensing on DVD playback and encryption don't offer the use of those things for free. Since Nintendo isn't into selling the hardware at a loss, they would have to raise the cost of the system. It's actually really simple, but if you want to blame someone, blame the DVD Forum.

Personally, I'd rather not pay any extra cash for DVD playback just because some dumbass doesn't have a DVD player in this day and age.
As if a DVD app would cost them 30 bucks...

Honestly, it'd be a good solution. It's what MS did with the XBox to offset the cost. Bundle it with a remote to boot.

$15-20. It's quite the lucritive business for the rights holders.

If the Wii U isn't going to play DVDs, then Nintendo should switch back to cartridges. There, I said it.

New games in Belgium / Europe cost €60 on release, and that's for disc based games. That's even more than $75. What's your point?...

Those same new games in belgium/europe would cost like €80 on release. What's your point?

You seem to be being augmentative for no reason.

Meh, the industry said games would become much cheaper once they became disc based. It never happened really. At least not to the extend it should have. Quite frankly, sometimes I wish games were still cartridge based...
