I'm with you. Games kill phone batteries good. That's why I treat my phone as a phone and my tablet as a gaming device.

That's why I charge my phone in the car, at work, and why I have a small battery pack in my work bag. *sigh*

Better battery life would help (and is likely on the way anyway), but I don't think it's a strict requirement. A phone could be a core device to put in a TV connected dock, or an eternal battery pack/controller, or just accept lower battery life if gaming on the go.

Battery life isn't an issue for gaming on my phone - hell, my New 3DS has craptacular battery life and I'm fine with that.

Poor battery life isn't a disinsentive to gaming on my phone because I can't play games for very long. It's a disincentive because it negatively impacts the non-gaming related usefulness of the device.

Edit - That said, I do find the concept of a phone-to-monitor dock interesting and there is certainly some reason to believe that is where consumer level computing is headed. I'm talking strictly about the portable aspect here since this conversation was more or less started by my statement that I hope dedicated portable gaming hardware never goes away. The current state of battery technology simply doesn't make my iphone a viable alternative to me.

this is my view as well. It's why I don't game on my phone* but I treat my tablet as a dedicated gaming device.

*well, I do use the GearVR sometimes but that's at home and can be plugged in while doing so.

Battery life can be a consideration for me as well, currently.

I think portable could/can be handled via auxiliary battery packs and things too, if built-in life isn't sufficient. It's less appealing, but compared to carrying an entirely separate device, probably still not that bad - doubly so if it adds other functionality, like controller input.

USB-C is starting to proliferate on phones, and will enable them to pretty readily have common docks/accessories like that.

A battery pack that's also a controller? Now that would have me intruiged...

Hardware aside, the other issue I have with iOS/Android gaming right now is discoverability. There are a lot of good games on mobile platforms - but there is also a lot of crap and some that are borderline scams. Unfortunately, it can be pretty hard to tell the difference a lot of the time.

It's not all bad - some games are ports of old console games and are a known quantity. Others are also on other platforms and I've heard of them before (Banner Saga, for example). But the stuff that's only on mobile platforms? I'm lost on those; no idea at all.

Do you have some good review sites you visit or other ways to separate the wheat from the chaff?

Speaking of this topic, has anyone played the Baldurs Gate or Icewind Dale iOS ports on IPhone?

Unpopular opinion for this:

If we're going to do phone gaming and the like, I want something similar to switch, but with steam compatability and split screen and all that jazz.

Since the beat em ups topic went there in the last day, I strongly feel Final Fight is better than Streets of Rage, and I mean trilogy on the whole, not specific games. FF3 does anything the SoR games do but better. I know that'll tweak off any Sega first types so it fits this thread well. :)
