It's the fighting game of that era I put the most time in for sure. I love the soundtrack, I love the light RPG elements, the simple-yet-responsive control scheme... there's just so much to like there.
And it had fatalities, stage fatalities, secret characteRSG and all that sort of goodness.

Not unpopular. I logged a lot of time into this, maybe even more than Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter II on the SNES. It was also the first game I played over a modem. The moves, arenas, customization options, music, awesome. Also it's totally free to play now.
It really was awesome. I remember playing the demo and going gaga over it. My mind reeled at the idea of what the other robots played like and looked at all the character profiles and built the world up in my head.
I am the kind of guy that loves fighting game stories and think they are the best/worst. I always have to beat the game with every character to see all the endings. I am a dork.
One Must Fall 2097 is no joke my favorite fighting game of all time. Warts and all. I probably put hundreds of hours into it as a kid, beating every story and maxing out every robot in tournament mode. It's one of many games my friend's college age brother pirated for us back in the day. I've been trying to track down a legitimate copy of the full version for years for my collection but I've never managed.
I was one of the first in line for the sequel and I am in the credits as a beta tester but unfortunately that game didn't turn out too well. It was before its time. If Kickstarter had existed back then they may have been able to get enough resources to make something of it and free themselves of their publisher. It was practically one guy trying to program an online arena fighting game that nobody had really done before.
I don't understand why they aren't still called shooters. That's what they were called back in the day, and Japan still calls them shooting. I know FPSes clouded things a little, but I don't know anyone who calls them shooters.

I think it is because of beat em ups. Speaking of which why don't we call those Beemups

That's why I tend to call them either "shumps" or "shooting games." Like how at the end of a lot of Konami games, it says "We Love Shooting Games!" It's a bit Japanese-centric, but there's really no other good way to describe the genre in a way that people can't immediately confuse with FPS's and such.
