What was the last movie you've seen?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

210 reviews, to be exact, since May of 2009 when I started cataloging moves I've seen on this thread. I am sure I've missed a few along the way, but essentially that means I've seen at least one movie every four days for the past two years.

If you want to check out the list, it is here: http://www.racketboy.com/forum/viewtopi ... start=2784

good list, and awesome to see you stuck with this! Two observations:

A) a lot of my favorite movies do not have *'s next to them
B) 83 of the 210 movies have "Harry Potter" in the title. :?

I am pretty stingy with my 4.5/5 or 5/5 grades. Probably a lot of those movies you like were granted a 4/5, which is very high praise in my book, it just isn't one of the all-time masterpieces of cinema. I probably tend to grant 4/5 as a top score to a genre film...it really has to transcend that audience or set a new standard for the genre to get a higher mark

The only ones that have a 4.5 or 5/5 are:

12 Monkeys
Alien
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
A Clockwork Orange
The Fighter
The Holy Mountain
The Hurt Locker
Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter
No Country for Old Men
The Omen
The Princess Bride
Psycho
Revolutionary Road
Rope
Silence of the Lambs
Some Like it Hot
Swing Time
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
There Will Be Blood
Toy Story
Toy Story 3
True Grit (2010)
The Wrestler

There are a few others which, arguably, could be included here but for some reason or another when I watched it I felt it was closer to a 4 than a 4.5. or 5.

I think most of them I knew were personal taste issues / splitting hairs. But I think the one that boggled my mind was The Thing.

D, as soon as you watch Santa Sangre... it's going to be on your top list.

I generally have a hard time giving a remake a high score, though I can certainly see the case for The Thing to get a 4.5. I gave it a 4, and think it has aged quite well...I guess I just thought Carpenter had done better, more original work.

The one that I don't know what I was thinking is For a A Fistful of Dollars, which I would rank high on the list of best Westerns of all time. I guess for some reason when I saw it I felt that it didn't feel like more than a very impressive genre film. In the time since seeing it, I have come to have a better appreciation for it....it deserves a 4.5 easily.

Oh, and I would give Scream a * also, if that helps you feel any better. I should note that I watched all the AFI 100 films in my late teens/early 20s, have studied film and film criticism, etc. - so I do have quite a long list of movies that I would consider to be "* worthy". I just haven't chosen to rewatch many of those films in the two years that I have been cataloging my list.

yeah. Whereas The Thing is technically a remake, it's more-so in name and theme than in execution. And I get what yr saying, but ultimately remake or not, I would just rate it on its ability to be a great movie. Which I think it is. Certainly Carpenter's done better, but I don't know. The Thing still scares me. Haha.

Westerns... I can't comment on. Not a genre I have ever been interested in.

I think every genre has some great films than anyone can appreciate. Have you watched many Westerns at all? I am guessing you'd like stuff like The Wild Bunch (seems to be very influential to Rodriguez and Tarantino), some of the Spaghetti Westerns (Dollars trilogy), and maybe even stuff like Unforgiven or 3:10 to Yuma. Hell, noise, I bet I could even find a superhero film or two you'd enjoy

Lucio Fulci did some fairly decent westerns but no one can beat Sergio Leone.

^I agree with that statement very much. I just haven't really taken the time to investigate Westerns. I'm sure I'd appreciate films that Tarantino has been inspired by. And I'm sure Spaghetti Westerns would be something I like -- as a fan of total trash -- . I'm really trying to think of ANY Western of seen. Hmm. I feel like I watched the Raimi one. What was that? I'm blanking. Shit. I don't know.

There actually are superhero films I like. I'm just completely fucking sick of the constant flood of them now. I really enjoyed the first two Spiderman movies, but didn't see the third. I thought Kickass was fantastic. But yeah for the most part, I'm just sick of them.

It's not a superhero movie but have you played X-Men Origins: Wolverine on the PS3, 360 or PC? It's a really cool game and it's gory as hell, you should give it a shot.
