People who weren't RPG fans probably weren't going to play it, and if they did it likely wasn't going to change their mind about the genre. People who were RPG fans were going to be bored out of their minds.
It was a good idea, but it just didn't work out the way they intended. Final Fantasy fans got a game they didn't want and non-Final Fantasy fans just didn't care.
But having an RPG skewed towards a younger crowd was still a good idea. We all know how Pokémon worked out.
I think you're dead-on here, it's always dangerous to talk down to an audience, so to speak. It's a good idea from a sales, growth and marketing perspective, but in the real world, word of mouth will eventually get out that this game "is for kiddies and/or idiots." And even then it's a crapshoot whether or not
they'll like it.
