I found Shining Force III to be quite difficult, much more so if trying to accomplish the optional objectives. Can't speak to the first two, however.
Let me clarify; I meant Shining Force as in
the first game itself. I found the first Shining Force to be fluffy cotton candy when I beat it. I have not played SF2 or SF3 yet however.

SF2 has some difficult moments or battles, especially if you increase the difficulty. The "problem", if you can call it one as it is the age old RPG issue with difficulty, is that you can just egress and power level your team by restarting the battle until you make the fight easier. So it is kind of a you make it as hard as you want it to be game.

Yeah, I did very little Egress-ing in SF2, and it definitely made things tricky towards the end. Also, Shining Force CD has some really tough battles, especially if you decide to do the optional boss museum chapter. I needed to find a way to power level more to even have a chance there.

Good point on that.
BTW, I'm finally currently playing through Tactics Ogre (PSP version). Just pointing that out because at one point you specifically told me to play it. I love it so far.

Awesome! And I think I suggested it more than once!
The story is engaging with memorable characters. The choice have definitive impact. I also like the large cast of characters available in battle.

Here's another opinion of mine that I think will prove to be very unpopular. I've been playing through the PSP port of Final Fantasy Tactics on and off for the past couple weeks, and honestly, I'm really not digging it that much. The combat is pretty standard SRPG stuff, which I enjoy, but the story just doesn't grip me, and the visuals are really dull and unappealing to me. It's not that the graphics are bad - I don't care much about that in most cases - but the visual style just doesn't really excite me. It feels a bit too desaturated. Maybe I just need to turn up the brightness on my PSP, but the visuals just feel dreary to me.

I much preferred the GBA and DS games to the PSP one.

I'm also of the opinion that FFT is a boring game. Granted, I'm not the biggest SRPG fan though. I've tried to get into it like three separate times and I can only make it a mission or two before I just really wanna do anything else.

Despite "popular opinion" (ahahahaha) JRPGs of all types started to get worse during the fifth gen.
The likes of Ogre Battle, Bahamut Lagoon, Front Mission, Shining Force II, and Der Langrisser MURDER Final Fantasy Tactics.

I feel like all games, JRPGs especially, are not enjoyable when they focus on padding versus good gameplay and story. Definitely was an issue in the very early Era of rpgs and in the 32 bit Era of rpgs.
