As somebody who had Sonic R as a kid and loves it to death. There's a few points I want to make.
Well actually one.
The controls don't suck, you just suck.
Seriously, there's nothing wrong with the controls. B accelerates, steering is done with the thumb stick/d-pad and leaning (for sharp turns) is done with the shoulder buttons. Braking is basically automatic, and you can press down to roll in a ball for the long straights.
Furthermore, at least in my opinion, the soundtrack is great... with the lyrics turned off. It's right there in the options, and makes the game about 80% better.

^I think lots of the complaints come from people who don't realize the shoulder buttons can help you turn and that you can shut off the lyrics.
