I'd put that and Tropical Freeze on my top 10 this year. Never had a problem with the controls. I hope Retro makes a third game (but I'd certainly take Metroid over it).

The only thing that gave me trouble was being able to "high jump" off of enemies.

It's neat that it's on the 3DS, but the game wasn't really meant for a handheld. I downloaded it as the free Elite gift, only because there was nothing else that interested me. It's kind of awkward on the 3DS, especially when DK is in the background.

I've certainly heard that Freeze is good, even from folks that didn't like DKCR, so I'll give it a fair shake one day.

For all the disappointment my posts have shown, I will say this much, DKC Tropical Freeze was the second to the last game I got for that thing and it did not disappoint. I never did more than a third of it as the WiiU had put me off quite a bit and then it died. What I did play was better crafted than the Wii/3DS title and less cheapo too with various things. I'd think it probably was the best game of the last year from Nintendo at least on the WiiU and it would be foolish to avoid it.

I too have the 3DS game as that elite download, had the card before, but I got it so cheap when I did and I flipped out on its cheapness so bad I snapped the thing. :) I'm not sure still why I downloaded it other than it was the best elite deal and maybe I'll give it a try again eventually.

My girlfriend and I may end up getting a Wii U sometime soon (really want that Star Fox game coming next year) and I was wondering what 4 games people would recommend, with this disclaimer: I've never liked any DKC game and I'm not a huge Smash Bros guy, and I can already get my Mario Kart fix with the 3DS game.

Mario 3D World and Captain Toad are already on my radar, but after that, what's left?

I'm still going to recommend Mario Kart 8. It's WAY better than the 3DS game.

Not a list of 4, but some other stuff worth considering:

Hyrule Warriors
Bayonetta 2
The Wonderful 101
Monster Hunter Tri Ultimate
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD
Pikmin 3
Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed
Lego City Undercover
New Super Mario Bros. U
Ultimate NES Remix (this is out in the US, right?)
Rayman Legends
Sonic Lost Worlds

General consensus is it's an ...okay sonic game?

It's certainly not as bad as most, but it has mixed feedback - some love it, some don't.

I would definitely advise getting Mario Kart 8. It really is a step above any other MK game IMHO. That aside, I would have to suggest:

Super Mario 3D World
Rayman Legends
Zelda: The Wind Waker HD
Ducktales Remastered
