My wife, her best friend and myself like to watch movies together because we love to rip them apart. Final Destination series = theater movie to us. Mainly because we love to laugh out loud at the theater. Same thing with Twilight, and so on.
Anyway, Rose (wifes besty) told us that I 'had' to take them to see Bridesmaids. I hadn't heard anything about it but I immediately turned them down. I don't do sappy rom-coms. If I'm at the movie it's either action/sci-fi/'splosions, or garbage to laugh at.
They sat me down and forced me to watch the trailer to Bridesmaids and I immediately changed my tone. That was one hell of a great movie. It was basically a rom-com, but I love that the romantic/comedy part of it was sort of 'on the side' to the rest of the movie. Loved that movie. We downloaded it a couple weeks before it finally came out on DVD, then bought the Blu/DVD combo and have watched it 5 or 6 times since. It's awesome.

I have to agree with that.dsheinem wrote:fixed that for ya.Luke wrote:[

People still get offended today, but I agree, it was a lot worse then. I thought it was nice that they cast actual people with deformities (today they'd just use actors in makeup). I was also pleased to see they touched on people's prejudices and compassion.KillerJuan77 wrote:I really liked Freaks, too bad that in the 30's everyone got offended by everything and instead of liking the film (It's an extremely good movie) they decided to destroy it along with Tod Browning's career. Something similar happened with Peeping Tom as well.Michi wrote:Watched Frankenstein and Freaks earlier this week on TCM. Frankenstein is always fun and I hadn't seen Freaks before. I'd heard mixed reviews about Freaks, but to my surprise I found it rather entertaining. I was also surprised how well all the 'freaks' were portrayed right up until the end. It was surprisingly sensitive

Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
I've always seen Freaks as a film that proves that beneath a lady with a beard or beyond a guy that can roll a cigar with his tongue there's a valuable, normal person. In the end the freaks in the movie end up being the normal people.Michi wrote:People still get offended today, but I agree, it was a lot worse then. Apatow has made some good ones.dsheinem wrote:fixed that for ya.Luke wrote:[

Sandler's Happy Gilmore squeaks in as it was released in 1996.
Like or loathe him, you have to agree Tyler Perry has some ridiculous moments in his films.
There are a bunch of good comedies out there. The Christopher Guest movies are great, and I think you would be hard pressed to not find 20 hilarious movies in the past 15 years.

Yeah, though funny films post-2000 are much harder to find...Luke wrote:Apatow has made some good ones.dsheinem wrote:fixed that for ya.Luke wrote:[

Let me give it a try with 25 that I'd rate 3.5/5 stars or better since1996. I’ll leave off hybrid stuff like Zombieland or Little Miss Sunshine or documentaries like The Aristocrats...
1. The Big Lebowski (this almost redeems the entire time period)
the rest are not ranked, they just happen to be what came to mind first...
2. Austin Powers
3. The Cable Guy
4. Dogma
5. There's Something About Mary
6. Happy Gillmore
7. Best in Show
8. Death at a Funeral
9. Old School
10. 40 Year Old Virgin
11. Clerks II
12. Office Space
13. Shaun of the Dead
14. Hot Fuzz
15. American Pie
16. Anchorman
17. Borat
18. South Park the Movie
19. Superbad
20. Oh Brother Where Art Thou
21. Bad Santa
22. Sideways
23. Team America: World Police
24. Idiocracy
25. ….yeah I think I am out
films in that list that are 2000 or later (14):
Best in Show
Sideways
Idiocracy
Bad Santa
Death at a Funeral
40 Year Old Virgin
Clerks II
Oh Brother Where Art Thou
Shaun of the Dead
Hot Fuzz
Anchorman
Superbad
Team America: World Police
Borat
Films that are 2006 or later (6):
Borat
Clerks II
Hot Fuzz
Death at a Funeral
Idiocracy
Superbad
Films from 2008 or later:
0
And most of the films on this list are much closer to 3.5/5 instead of 4/5 or 5/5...
So yeah, comedy has really struggled for the past 5-10 years, with an especially notable lack of funny movies in the past 3-4 years...
Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
I can agree with that. I would also add that if Animated movies counted as comedies, the past ten years have been great. Kind of makes me realize that the best movies in the past decade have mostly been animated films.
I mean, UP, LITTLE NEMO, SHREK, etc., are all incredible pieces of cinema masterpieces, and what movies receive more accolades? The King's Speech? Great movie, but the animated movies seem to have you emotionally invested in the characters within five minutes.
