Wii-U thoughts so far
Re: Wii-U thoughts so far
I played Twilight Princess on the Wii with the remote constantly rested in my lap/knees. You seriously didn't have to try with that one...
Re: Wii-U thoughts so far
Ziggy I'm with you, the motion controls tacked onto Twilight were terrible and unncessary, hurt the controls of the game, some terribly like the wolf. But the real sad one was having no normal control choice with Skyward Sword. I had been enjoying that one for awhile but it got so tiring having to 1:1 slash the arms and shield around in combat since it was specifically designed for it. I eventually stopped on that game about 2/3 of the way into it and just never went back to it when I moved 2 years ago primarily just due to that. It's also why I stopped in related forced play the DS game with the wonky touch controls and the backtrack dungeon from hell at the starting island of the game.
Re: Wii-U thoughts so far
I honestly don't think the motion controls killed Twilight Princess. I mean, unnecessary, probably, but it certainly wasn't unplayable. And aiming your arrows and such was much, much better.
Skyward definitely delivered a better product on the control front. I didn't have any problems with the 1:1 (or close enough) combat, and thought it was quite enjoyable. I know folks love to hate on Skyward, but it's definitely one of my favorite 3D Zelda games.
I'm still much more partial to the 2D entries, of course, and seeing them play it straight with A Link Between Worlds was wonderful... even if I didn't have a whole lot of trouble with control in the DS games, either.
I guess others' mileage may vary. Or I'm some sort of motion-gaming savant. I'm pretty sure it's not the latter!

It's kind of crazy I still haven't caved for a 3DS. I've never been huge on handhelds because of comfort and I don't have any need to take them anywhere, but there is no denying the 3DS library is totally stacked with so much stuff I want to check out. I'll probably get an XL sometime.
Re: Wii-U thoughts so far
Well I never played Twilight Princess (aside from 10-15 minutes worth) so I really can't comment. I just know that I don't particularly like motion controls, and usually avoid them whenever possible.
That said, there's certain types of motion controls that I REALLY do enjoy. Like RE4, which I've recently been talking about in the Random Gaming Thoughts thread. I'm having so much fun with that game using the Wiimote and nunchuck. If I was playing it on GCN or PS2, I know I just wouldn't have fun with it because of the aiming. Although, I fucking HATE when I accidentally swipe the knife because I moved the Wiimote.
THAT said, aiming with the Wiimote is pretty much the extent of what I like about motion controls. It's always perfect for aiming, such as the bow in a Zelda game. I just hate having to wave my arms around every time I wanna swing the sword. I'd rather just press A instead.
At the time I was playing Skyward Sword, I was working two jobs and was physically exhausted at the end of the day. I WAS having fun with Skyward, I thought it was a great game, I was just too tired to wave my arms around constantly.
I've said it a million times before on this forum, but I play games to relax. If I want to be active, I'll go out and ride my mountain bike or something. When I play video games, I don't want it to be physically exhausting. I just want to relax. Aiming by pointing the Wiimote isn't so bad, but I can't deal with much more than that. I never had a problem with the "waggle" in NSMB or DKC Returns (although I really fucking hate when you do it by mistake, or DON'T when you meant to - I will always prefer a button press). And the limited use of motion controls in Super Mario Galaxy was fun (like when you're balancing on top of a ball).

It's a fantastic game overall, get the GameCube version and just play it with a controller man.Ziggy587 wrote:Well I never played Twilight Princess (aside from 10-15 minutes worth) so I really can't comment. I just know that I don't particularly like motion controls
I have rotten memories of trying to get DK to blow on a flower and instead he just rolls off the ledge due to waggle bullshit.DKC Returns (although I really fucking hate when you do it by mistake, or DON'T when you meant to - I will always prefer a button press).
PLAY KING'S FIELD.
Re: Wii-U thoughts so far
I really don't remember being strained much by the combat in Twilight. It really only takes a flick of the wrist, very little effort at all. I had it down to a minimal set of movement to pull any moves. The only really unresponsive move I can remember was the shield bash with the nunchuck. It just never really wanted to pull off like it should have.
And even if it was tacked on, I kinda liked flailing away on a boss. Felt pretty sweet.

Re: Wii-U thoughts so far
THe problem with Twilight waggle play was just that, effort and them patching a game not meant for it causing issues. I kept the GC version and ditched the Wii one. The Wii game that opening sequence early with the flaming wagon and the attack mob in the field took me over an hour to do on the Wii. I found myself consistently fighting with the controls while jockeying it around to deal with hitting the enemy. The same sequence I finished on the first pass on the Cube in a matter of minutes, it played and felt different, better. The wolf controls on the Wii required some odd wiggling to do moves and it wasn't 100% responsive or would pop you in a less than ideal direction, yet on the GC pad it was as smooth as using normal Link.
I also agree that games, unless you're buying Wii Fit, DDR, or something of the type, are not meant to be physical. You play them for fun, to relax, a release or escape. You've had a long day, you don't want to be putting out more energy to do something a button and a stick could accomplish in most cases far better. I can't say all because pointing worked for a more similar to a keyboard/mouse experience with shooters, and RTS/click to play adventure games worked better that way too simulating a mouse.

But then it wont be in widescreen. It's a trade off.Exhuminator wrote:It's a fantastic game overall, get the GameCube version and just play it with a controller man.Ziggy587 wrote:Well I never played Twilight Princess (aside from 10-15 minutes worth) so I really can't comment. I suppose I could either try and find a widescreen patch for the GCN version, or use the "force widescreen" mode in a GCN loader (I'd probably be playing on my Wii). But what I'm surprised about is that no one (at least, I'm not aware) created a CC and/or GCN controller hack.
I honestly never had a problem. Just every once in a while I'd accidentally waggle, or not flick the controller hard enough, and it pissed me off that they didn't implement a CC option (WHY Nintendo, WHY!?!?).Exhuminator wrote:I have rotten memories of trying to get DK to blow on a flower and instead he just rolls off the ledge due to waggle bullshit.Ziggy587 wrote:DKC Returns (although I really fucking hate when you do it by mistake, or DON'T when you meant to - I will always prefer a button press).
At least with DKC Returns there's an easy solution to use the CC (on a soft mod Wii).
Re: Wii-U thoughts so far
I've found DKC Returns to be a bit of a chore to play anyway. I hate the physics in the game mostly. I was playing on the 3DS, and I'd practically forgotten I had it.
