I'm not saying it'd be a bad thing if it didn't(especially since I hate those "it's needs allz the latest specz" groups >_<). I just hate that all we're getting for now is that short vid even if there are others that examine it in depth for new stuff
I'm definitely in that group, but 1080p when displaying on the television needs to be a given. As it gets more and more affordable to get large TVs (especially as 4k prices continue to drop and more support for the resolution appears), 720p just isn't going to cut it on larger TVs.
I have to ask, but who are those people who always have to buy the latest, biggest, coolest TVs? Do they exist?

When I was a kid, my parents would buy a TV and then wait for it to die before buying a new one. That could be as long as 10 years (or hell, even longer back then, probably). Now I'm the same.

I'm really struggling to see the big fuss about 4K. Sure, in god knows how many years time when my TV breaks, they'll probably be the norm and 4K gaming will be the norm, but until then, 1080p is doing me just fine...

@reprise they're the people who follow IGN and the others on that bandwagon. It seems like they are the first to diss most of what N does especially when they announce something like this. It's also a good chunk of the people i go to school with that call themselves gamers but yet they only play CoD or the latest sports games....

I think they're more the fringe - go to AVSForum or something and you certainly do find them though. As it is though, offering content that actually takes advantage of what newer TVs on the market can do isn't bad. It's really just kind of expected.

Resolution is one thing, but the increased color depth is pretty appealing on the newer 4k (and 8k) standards. Either way, native 4k is still a ways off for consoles. They all still struggle with native 1080p/60. However, it is preferable to have scaling done internally, since leaving it to the TV (or AV receiver/etc) will probably introduce more lag.

And generally looks like garbage depending on how much scaling is being done (i.e. an NES game on Retron 5 vs an actual NES plugged into a 1080p TV).

Amen, dude.

I have never paid more than $100 for a TV set. Heck, I picked up my last TV set off of a curb. Anyone who spends thousands of dollars on the latest and greatest TV set is out of his mind.

Remember C.E.S. 2011? The big buzz that year was 3D television. It didn't catch on; it was just another passing fad, but you can bet a few folks with more money than sense probably ponied up for a new 3D television before the fad fizzled out.

I don't think this is really fair. I'm no big videophile - our TV's are just pretty standard middle of the road LCD's. But if someone is really into video stuff then that's their thing. Like, gaming is my biggest hobby so I was able to justify buying a fancy 27" monitor (that technically cost more than several of the TV's in the house combined...) because that's what I'm into. I mean, some folks might read this thread and think that anyone who is willing to spend money on a Nintendo-branded Android tablet is out of their mind.

(I promise that this post isn't meant in a dickish way. I'm just saying that we're on a forum where members spend all kinds of money on "Limited Edition" physical copies, or spend triple-digits for games (Neo Geo comes to mind, or Earthbound, or...) that you could get for a couple bucks on Steam or Virtual Console. So it's not really fair to judge).

Eh, or they have the means to do so and choose to. Objectively speaking, if nobody bought them new, then nobody would be scoring a sweet TV from the curb years later.

Tech usually does have a sweet spot though. Most of us aren't going out and spending $10-20k on a TV when the tech first comes out (there are, of course, enough rich people that can/do). However, $2-3k range, maybe? I dunno. That's what computers used to routinely cost, when it was a lot more money. Definitely pricier than what people used to spend on your average CRT though. There's probably a whole 'nother topic there, regarding average home A/V quality or investment.

I don't think people that bought a 3D TV really lost out either, since 90% of what made that work was a higher refresh rate panel. If it supported 24fps without 3:2 pulldown as a result (as many did), then it was nice. Potentially could support other features too. Bigger thing was likely buying the glasses (or extra pairs), and for those that did, there are still 3D Blu-ray releases.
Not big on it personally, and I opted to buy the version of my current TV that didn't include 3D. Just saying.

(also, 'member when Nintendo built an entire system around stereoscopic 3D? )

The most I've spent on a TV is $500, and that's for the 40" Sony Bravia that I have now. My buddies who work at Best Buy tell me that the best time for TV sales is around the Super Bowl, so I'll probably up to a 4K in February (maybe not depending on how much remaining credit card debt I still have by that point), and I've decided to allow myself to spend up to $1500 on that (maybe a liiiiittle more if it's a wicked good price on some giant fucker).
