I really dislike clean male vocals in metal. It's one reason I've never been crazy about traditional doom metal or most regular old "heavy metal" - Candlemass, Solitude Aeturnus, Mercyful Fate, Acrimony, Lake of Tears, and a few others are notable exceptions.
Metallica and Megadeth (even their "good" old stuff) always sounded a little too "buttrock" for my taste.
I disagree with your assessment of low growls though - low growls kick ass!
I like both types of vocals. And I also like butt rock. Metallica and Megadeth I don't consider butt-rock, though. They're thrash, at least Metallica's older stuff could be considered as such, and they're later stuff hard-rock. Megadeth still plays hard and fast.
I consider butt-rock to be 80s hair-metal bands, which I also adore. I'm a big fan of a lot of 80s stuff and I dig these bands just as much. Bands like Cinderella, Motley Crue, Ratt, Skid Row, Dokken, and solo Ozzy Osbourne are what I'd consider butt-rock.
you listed most of the bands i loved growing up in their heyday. i could appreciate slayer, metallica and the lighter side of most glam bands (sounds better than butt rock).
anyway, any bands out there sound like old school thrash? our radio stations are the suck here and i don't look for new music as much as i should. bands like bfmv and trivium kinda have that metallica thrash, but any more out there i can check out?

Oh man, you went to the right thread at the right time. There's a huge Thrash Metal revival right now with many new bands sounding like Exodus, Slayer, Megadeth, etc. Here's a few some Metallica/Exodus style bands that I enjoy:
Gama Bomb - Killer Exodus/Anthrax style Thrash band. An added bonus is that many of their songs are about nerdy subjects such as video games, sci-fi movies, and Super Heroes.
Evile - I haven't listened to these guys too much, but I've enjoyed the songs I have listened to. Good Slayer style band.
Bonded By Blood - As you can probably guess by their name, this band plays Thrash in the vein of Exodus. My opinion is pretty much the same as my opinion of Evile.
Havok - This band rips your face off with no mercy! I saw them recently and they put on a great show with an insane moshpit.
Speed Kill Hate - I don't come back to this band very often but their debut album: Acts of Insanity is fun for a few listens. I haven't listened to their recent album: Out for Blood yet. This band is a side project of Overkill's Dave Linsk.
Swashbuckle - I talked a little bit about this band before. I went to one of their concerts earlier this year and had a real good time. Great crowd interaction. The band's gimmick is having pirates as their lyrical subject. Tales about the exploits of buccaneers actually makes for some pretty good metal songs. They might be a bit of a stretch as their sound strays into Kreator territory at times.

I went and saw Megadeth last night in Reno and it was freaking awesome! Best show I've been to. Kyng, the opening band, sucked balls though. No problem since Dave and the boys showed em how it's done. Reno is the best place to see a show, too. Drinks while you wait in line, and a massive concert hall where you get your own table with full-service bars in the place.

Re: Metal Heads Assemble!!
imo, the best current thrash band is Vektor. they seem to be bringing a new twist onto the thrash revival scene as opposed to bands like evile, warbringer, and gama bomb (who i like, but just saying)
power trip is decent, too, but they're more of a hardcore band playing thrash riffs. it's still good though.

Only one of the "thrash revival" type bands I truly enjoyed was Cross Examination. They're a lot of fun.
