Pokemon White DS *NEW*
Bio Miracle Bokutte Upa VC *NEW* Total: 13
If you don't like Pokemon, Black and White aren't gonna make you see differently. If you do, they're probably the best in the series. As a long time fan, this is a pretty big deal for me to decide this. Everything feels more polished, everything flows faster and a lot of old annoyances are ironed out (you don't need to use HMs to beat the game!). The new cast of pokemon are good and they generally all feel pretty usable, unlike some pokemon from earlier gens. Although I've beat this, it looks like theres still a fair amount still to play - about a quarter of the map has been unaccessable to me until I beat the main story. Not bad, especially as the main story was just the right length to play through imo.
Bio Miracle is a game I've had for a long time and just kept playing a little, dieing and turning off again. Its a shame, because it's actually a good fun game from Konami. The main character is a baby with a magic rattle which makes enemies inflate. These ballooned enemies casn be used as platforms, or with a push, launched as weapons at opponents. If they rebound they can hurt Upa though! The game has 7 worlds with 3 levels in each. Its not a long game, but I didn't feel like it was particularly lacking for a Famicom era game (the game was originally on Famicom Disk System, but is available as an import download on Virtual Console). It's good stuff, although nothing special. Infinite continues make the game easy for a quick go too, although some of the platforming sections can be frustrating, especially seeing as you have to restart the level if you die and the world if you game over and continue.
Next up: Kirby's Dreamland 3 and uh...something else? Not sure what I feel like playing really.

I'm still keeping a bunch of these as new until I get the time to write something about them. Playing Fable III right now, and I may go back to playing Retro Game Challenge as well. Just got a PS3 too, with Killzone 3, so I'm going to try that out soon.

The original Rival Schools was the greatest surprise for me on the PSX - I bought it on a whim in High School just because Sakura was on the packaging. And then the summer of '99 happened.
I'd be lying if I said that I felt Project Justice is as good as the original Rival Schools. Project Justice feels slower. There does not seem to be much balance in the character roster. The music is not quite as memorable. No Sakura.
That said, this game still has a LOT going for it. The visuals are out-freaking-standing and the new characters are some of the most creative I've ever seen while staying true to the High School theme of the game - if anything, they further reinforce that gimmick. The story mode should be the standard for the genre, providing not only a great reason to come back to the game over and over but also forcing you to try a broad selection of the cast.
This game might not be as close to perfect as the original but it's pretty damn close.
THIS game is one of the main reasons I wanted a Dreamcast.

Man I loved this game. I knew I would, and I'm ashamed I waited so damn long to play it. Great story and dialogue, lovable characters, intriguing missions, beautiful environments, and just plain damn fun.
The final mission wasn't quite as epic as the one in the first game. Not to say it was bad (it was awesome) but it's hard to top the first game's Citadel space walk. Maybe that's just me though.
Mass Effect is such a great series, and the wait for the third game is going to be torture.

Oi, it's seriously taken me several days to actually sit down and write this. I've continued playing the game in the meantime, so now I've beaten Story mode on normal with 8 of the 12 base characters. I have mixed feelings on certain aspects of the game, but I really like it, so I'm going to keep on with all 12, figure out who I like the most, and then start trying out Hard difficulty with them.
Anyway, Gundam Battle Assault mixes and matches from a plethora of Gundam properties, many of which I'm not familiar with, as I'm not really a big Gundam fan. That's not to say I dislike the series, I'm just not really into it. Game wise though, Gundam has provided some awesome hits, especially Gundam Wing: Endless Duel, which was a tough legacy to follow. Gundam Battle Assault handled itself well though, and I'm happy to say I feel it's an excellent followup to its Super Famicom predecessor. I do have some criticisms, but I'll come to them in a bit.
First, what I liked: the game features a wide array of mobile suit styles, allowing for some very divergent fighting and gameplay styles which let a player pick a character that conforms to their needs. While every character features a limited supply of ammunition and an unblockable attack set to the same commands, and certain characters feature similar movesets, now that I've gotten to better know the characters, I'm finding a lot of guys with stuff I like. Say I want a character with Funnel abilities (tiny guns which can fly around and shoot the other guy), I can then pick based on mobility, fighting style, speed, and other moves to decide who I want. Or say I would rather dodge instead of using an energy shield...I've got options. I don't feel trapped with the character choices. The only gripe I have among the starting 12 is that one Gundam is little more than a palette swap, but that's really my only complaint. And if I don't like the 12 choices, there's a lot more to unlock in multiplayer (I've currently got the original 12 plus 4 more, but there's still more to get).
The animations in this game are fluid, and combat is heavily focused around mobility. I like that some characters have different options for avoiding moves, though in general I much prefer the shift characters who can step into the background for a second to the energy shield-based suits. Sure, they both offer protection from different types of attacks, but the sidestepping really suits how I play. The game's also pretty. Really pretty. I think I'm going to wave this game in front of anyone who criticizes the "poor 2D" of the PlayStation from now on.
Now my complaints...first, I dislike the controls. No, not quite, I dislike the system for inputting special commands. D-pad rolls can work some of the time in Gundam Battle Assault, but my success rate for those is probably only near 50%, and that's only on basic moves. Instead you have to tap each individual direction, which I didn't figure out until my fourth playthrough. I thought I was just terrible at the game, and I got continuously creamed until I discovered this (seriously, my clear times for story mode were around 40 minutes).
I also dislike the number of bosses. 2 would have been fine, 3 not so bad, but 4? Really? In particular Psycho Mark III wants to eat my soul. He doesn't have an animation for taking damage, so I've died repeatedly from him walking up and then spamming unblockable attacks...he's big, his stage is tiny, and he really kills the whole mobility aspect of the game. I just feel the whole thing would be a better game without him.

Prototype – PS3
I really enjoyed Prototype. It’s a sandbox game often compared to Infamous. I’ve only played the demo of Infamous but believe strongly that I would enjoy it just as much as Prototype, probably more. In Prototype you play as the angry angst-ridden hoodie wearing weird biological weapon parasite of some sort invested Alex Mercer. You have to complete missions to uncover/advance the story while fighting/avoiding both the military forces and infected creatures which spawn from hives covering infected areas. As far as I was concerned, the missions were nothing special and neither was the story. What made Prototype fun was the powers you could unlock and play with along the way. In fact, if the game hadn’t given me a taste of the powers you receive latter in the game near the beginning I probably wouldn’t have kept playing. Some of your powers include the ability to absorb people to either regain health or unlock some of their memories in your ever expanding “web of interest,” the ability to impersonate whoever you absorb for stealth gameplay, the ability to run up sides of buildings, and the ability to surf through the streets on people’s bodies. Then there are all the abilities available for each version of your arm you can use for attacking. For instance, the whip fist can latch on to helicopters and pull you up to them for hijack, or the hammer fist can be used for punch cars into the air. There are far too many abilities to list, but I can assure you if you’re looking for a sandbox game where you just want to have fun running around a city causing complete chaos and terror while moving at incredible speeds and imitating military personnel, Prototype fits the bill.
3D Dot Game Heroes – PS3
This was a very enjoyable game and I did like it but it wasn’t really what I was hoping for, as I thought it would be a love letter to retro games spanning multiple genres. I really don’t have much to say about it other than it’s both a very fun game and a very pretty game. If you’ve played The Legend of Zelda, Neutopia, Golden Axe Warrior, or Beyond Oasis, you know what type of game you’re getting into. If you like any of those games, I would be very surprised if you didn’t enjoy 3D Dot Game Heroes.
Mario Tennis – VB
This is really nothing more than a basic tennis game presented in the Virtual Boy’s 3D style with Mario characters, but I find it to be a very fun and relaxing tennis game. I played through a 1 set match tournament on normal difficulty with each one of the seven characters. I completely lost track of time while I was playing but I used the Virtual Boy for several hours. Upon taking it off, I felt a very unsettling sensation which I can only describe as it felt like my eyes were melting. No headaches or nausea though!
New Adventure Island – TG16
This was my first TG16 game, but I had yet to beat the game. Seeing as it seems to have unlimited continues, I decided to actually sit down and dedicate myself to finishing the game. It’s an extremely fun platformer for rainy days. (I’m always drawn to TG16 and SNES platformers on rainy days – I have no idea why) You’re constantly assaulting an array of enemies with various weapons like axes, boomerangs, and arrows while attempting to grab any fruit along the way to keep a bar at the top of the screen from diminishing. If the bar does diminish, you die just like when you run into enemies. This makes the game very fast paced, as you can’t spend much too much time planning out your platforming. There are several worlds, each with four stages and a final boss. I found all of them quite enjoyable, and when you defeat each boss you are rewarded with a goofy and zany dance.
Pokemon Soulsilver – NDS
This is how to do remakes. The original game is intact, but completely revamped graphically, with a ton of new pokemon, new areas to explore, new items to find, etc. The list goes on and on. The Pokewalker accessory is pretty neat, and is surprisingly fun to pick up, see how many points you have from walking, and then use the points to try to catch new pokemon or find hidden items to transfer back to your main game. I’ve gotten 16 badges, and caught several legendary pokemon, but the game has so much to offer that I could easily spend countless more hours playing the same file while finding new things to do.
Street Fighter IV – PS3
After beating the game on normal difficulty with all the characters, including the ones I had to unlock, I have yet to really get into this game. I was always more of a Mortal Kombat fan, but I liked Super Street Fighter II for my Genesis, and playing Street Fighter IV just made me want to play that instead. I enjoy playing IV with my friends (not online), but I just don’t find the single player experience very fun. It’s a shame because it’s the only Street Fighter game I’ve ever felt that way about and I can’t quite put a finger on why. It’s not the difficulty, as you can usually exploit the enemy AI pretty easily. (I’ve kicked Seth in the shins more times than I can count) I guess I just find the way the opponents fight to be more annoying than challenging.
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater – PS1
I beat this game back when it first came out and enjoyed it for being an over-the-top skateboarding game. I suddenly had an urge to play it again and was able to go through career mode with Elissa Steamer acquiring all 26 tapes and 3 gold medals with relative ease. Aside from the controls feeling a little clunky at times, I was surprised how well the game still held up for me. It reminded me that I still need to give some of the sequels a chance.

Capcom Fighting Evolution....umm...what the hell did I just play?
All I know is that I am now a member of a small cadre of video game enthusiasts who have Dragon Punched a Tyrannosaurus Rex in the face.
This game honestly makes no sense. The cast is a juxtaposition of big name characters and nobodies in an unbalanced mess. The graphics are cobbled together from half a dozen games with no effort made to clean them up. There seems to be no story to speak of. It feels like Capcom noticed Neo Geo Battle Coliseum on a store shelf and decided Capcom had to have its own mish mash fighter.
But for some reason I like this game. A LOT.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

I recently spent an extended amount of time replaying 1 and 2 for an article I was working on. One is still surprisingly good, but the jump from the first to the second is amazing. Something as simple as Manuals being utilized to string together combos just made a great game near-perfect.
3 and 4 are also very good. Though I'd say 2 or 3 is my personal favorite.
