Interesting.

When I played Wind Waker HD a few years ago, I ended up liking it even more than I did when I first played Wind Waker on Gamecube back at launch.

I could never get into Wind Waker on the GC. I never bothered with the HD update.

That said, I've had a hard time getting into 3D Zelda in general and vastly prefer the 2D entries in the series.

I played the GC version few years back and i remember WW being really dull because the dungeons were so barren. I also hated that stealth dungeon and when the game asked you to do all that scavenging before last dungeon i just couldn't take it anymore and gave up.

I do feel like i should at somepoint go back and finish it though.

I'm the same. The pacing seems a bit all over the place. It seems to start slow, then it gets intense and before you know it, you have to collect the Tri Force shards and you're near the end of the game and you think "but I was just getting into this". It feels like there's an entire part of the game that's just completely missing towards the end, which there probably is since they cut two dungeons from the release in order to get it out in a timely manner.

It does have a ton of charm though and I love the art direction and sound design/music.

You're completely right on this point - WW is easily the best looking 3D Zelda by far IMHO.

Jaggies aside, I personally like Skyward Sword's look the most by far. It has the color of Wind Waker, with the more traditional Ocarina style with the character designs.

I agree with Elkin's thoughts on the combat in WW being perhaps the series best with the 3D installments. But that and a cool art style can only go so far for me.

I am one of those that believes that, to date, "good combat" and "3D Zelda" don't go together. :D

I hope Breath of the Wild changes my mind.

Windwaker is a personal favorite mostly because it was the first one I worked as a launch when working retail and one of the store regulars had a Japanese copy. He brought it in one night with his Japanese Cube and I got to beat the first dungeon before anyone else I knew got to play it. It doesnt hurt that I loved the sailing, the music, and it was the last console Zelda to come out where I could dedicate alot of time to playing it.

When I first saw the Spaceworld 2001 trailer I thought they ruined the franchise:

But when I got ahold of it, it was like playing Mario 64 for the first time. It was what I wanted out of OOT and MM. It was the story driven sandbox game for me. Yeah the fetch quest was a bit much - though I really enjoyed it thematically the first time through, but all of my issues with the game were fixed in the final battle. I had hoped for that to happen since I was a kid wanting a coop Zelda 1.

That said, I have not played it since beating TP and most of Skyward Sword. So I might have to fire up the HD version.

So far, the only remade Zelda that really wowed me over its initial entry was Ocarina. I can admit that Majora's Mask is improved, too, but that game still isn't for me.

Wind Waker has never been my favorite, although it's still got redeeming qualities. When I get a hankering to replay Twilight Princess, it'll be with the HD version. I suspect I'll have a ton of fun with that one, because I thought TP was one of the best 3D Zelda games for sure.

I do show quite a bit of partiality to the 2D games, though. For my money, Link's Awakening and A Link to the Past still sit at the pinnacle.
