Eh, it's more a collector's item, albeit one that sold 1.5M units and will likely end up cheap in the long run.
Functionally, yeah, Pi3 runs circles around it, and folks have been pointing that out since before it released.

Re: NES Classic
My point was simply if one wants to have a mini-NES to play on their HDTV, they can do it relatively easily and inexpensively without Nintendo's help. If however the appeal is an actual mini-Nintendo made by actual-Nintendo, then just wait a while. These things will end up on eBay in droves eventually.
PLAY KING'S FIELD.
Re: NES Classic
Others have also rightfully pointed out that you could pick up a RetroUSB AVS system, and actually have something resembling a real NES with HDMI output. Combine that with an Everdrive, and you've got something way more robust than the NES Classic.
Plus, if you really want to go overboard, you can get an Analogue Nt mini.

Re: NES Classic
Realistically speaking that thing is just for people who want to use real carts, non-emulated, and on a modern 3 figure priced deck. A niche within a niche if there ever was one, plus you still get pounded buying carts or just shelling out another $100~ for a flash kit.Sarge wrote:Others have also rightfully pointed out that you could pick up a RetroUSB AVS system, and actually have something resembling a real NES with HDMI output. Better off just going the Pi route and paying someone to set it up or DIY so that the menu system if your lucky maybe customized to look/behave fairly well like the Nintendo made unit for less money than any other option.
I think people keep forgetting this wasn't meant for collectors, it wasn't meant for virtual console fans who have other hardware already, nor was it made as some huge cash cow. This was in a screwball way designed like the Wii was in a sense, the lapsed and forgotten gamer. It was meant as a holiday flashback, a holy crap I remember that moment in time to cash in on with the low price it had. The wrong people got involved and it got amped up to ugly continuing proportions. This is for the people who couldn't in their mind setup a Pi unit or other emulator, meant for those who wanted to share a bit of those kid days with their kids too.
This is what it was meant for. And she cleared Kirby world 1 and a bit more all on her own other than minor verbal coaching with Wispy Woods.

...and yes Applejack is mooning the scalpers who lost this one today in the wild.
Re: NES Classic
Well put Tanooki.
I just wish it was more available so that I can talk to other people in real life about the classics again. My associates really won't give the games the time of day any other way than a convenient and legit product.
The world of today is so weird. Game companies seem so worried about hacks and piracy and everyone I talk to are to good for or can't be bothered with them anyways.
Clearly there is a disconnect between consumer and maker.
I don't like the scalpers, but I don't altogether blame them for the problem either. I just don't see the reason that these couldn't be produced adequately after the initial demand for it.

...just another lost soul...
Re: NES Classic
Oh totally. I'm not going to sell it, but I just thought I'd have a look and couldn't quite believe it. I mean, I know scalpers are pushing up the price a crazy amount, but it seems mad to me that game shops will just hand over crazy cash (or even more in vouchers) for one too, without people having to even bother and worry about using Ebay etc.Tanooki wrote:That's crazy but personally as a matter of principle I'd say keep it. That way you're not rewarding those assholes who will scalp it for a even notably higher price than what they're already heavily paying for in the first place. It's just allowing them to rip someone else off.
Mind you, that store (CeX) hands over insane amounts for a lot of retro games too. I was showing my wife how much they would pay for some of my games and she was like "oh my god, why don't you ever sell any!? It's not like you play many of them". Her face was a picture when I pointed out I have two boxed, complete copies of Banjo-Tooie... and that I won't be selling any of my games
