anyway, back to OP... the new Mobb Deep is sick. Maybe the first hip hop album I'm really feeling this year!

a) Jay never was what Guru/Gangstarr was, he was on that hustler shit since day 1 so product endorsement isn't exactly outta line, nevermind the whole "truthfully i wanna rhyme like common sense, but i did 5 mill/ain't been rhymin like common since"

b) while we're throwing around opinions: Rap god was a mismatch of styles on another disappointing Em album, i thought. maybe that's not fair but Slim's best moments in the last decade have pretty much been the less terrible ones for me (parts of Recovery i guess, mostly Bad Meets Evil 2 i wanna say)

I loved "Rap God." Can't lie. And I actually thought MMLP2 was great - to my own surprise. To me, it was actually the best thing he's done since his hiatus.

Recovery, I listened to recently - and it was better than I remembered.

The new BME, I liked... but I didn't love it. I don't know. I loved the early BME tracks and it just didn't quite do it for me. Not bad by any means, but I def preferred MMLP2 - again, to my own surprise haha.

As far as Eminem and Jay-Z go, I think they are both very talented but I just can't buy their records like I could ten years ago. Eminem is an incredible lyricist and MMLP2 was a return to form of sorts, but it just didn't grab me. I don't know if it's because subconsciously I'm yearning for that younger, tighter flow from Em or have heard so much lyrical rap that it's losing its appeal - I just wouldn't buy a Jay or Em record in 2014. As far as Jay-Z goes, I found Magna Carta very average. Hearing him talk about fine art and investing in companies isn't as fun as it could be, because he's actually serious. It's a strange situation because many rappers talk about living big and spending money, but knowing that Jay-Z genuinely is a multi-millionaire businessman with not just a trophy wife, but the woman that men AND women want to be with - it feels like he is just rapping for the sake of it. He has arguably been the king of New York hip hop for 15 years, and I think it's time he stepped aside before his legacy is tainted with more underwhelming albums.

Does Sugar Hill Gang count as rap? I like some late 70s-early 80s artists, but anything beyond that just doesn't do it for me. Is there another term now?
How about "regular everyday normal guy" and "everyday normal crew". My friend plays those for me when he's plugged into the stereo and it always makes my day - any fans of parody? Lonely Island?

FYI,

Most of the rappers who performed in clubs did not want to record. It is said that Robinson's son heard a rapper in a pizza place, and the rapper was persuaded to come to a studio and record someone else's words while "Good Times" was played.

Big Bank Hank once managed Grandmaster Caz (Casanova Fly) of The Cold Crush Brothers. Hank's verse was originally written by Caz[23] as evident by his first line: "I'm the C-A-S-A-N-O-V-A and the rest is F-L-Y". Sugarhill and Hank never gave any money or credits as a songwriter or co-writer to Grandmaster Caz.

Return of the Mac was amazing.

So put it this way: when Return came out, I was like "I really wish Mobb Deep would make an album this good." And now I feel like they have.
