Freedom Planet is pretty good but I didn't beat it, so I'm not sure what that says for me.

I guess this fits the thread quite nicely but I basically despise Super Meat Boy and anything like it. Twitch based platforming is boring incarnate.

I agree on Cave Story. Thought it was a lot of fun til the end. Oh well.

If anyone can actually beat them, it's gotta be Sarge!

I played a little of the first one but I got bored quickly. It wasn't really because of the difficulty (which is pure sadism), I just found it kind of bland. I appreciate that they're actual NES games and not just modern games with a retro-skin though.

For Cave Story, are you referring to just the final 3 bosses, or the optional hell gauntlet at the end of the game you can do for the secret ending? THAT is one tough mother fucker. I've had Cave Story on my DSi like foreeever. I've played through it like 4 or 5 times. I love that game :)

I can see why people wouldn't like it though. I mean, I only bought it because I'd seen a full playthrough of the PC translation way back in the early days of Let's Playing. I literally can't imagine what the game is like going through blind. There's so much shit you'd never know to do, like

not saving Professor Booster when he gets teleported into the junkyard so then he'll live long enough to make the better rocket pack. Then if you hadn't traded in your Polar Star since the beginning of the game, you can use that better rocket pack to go back to the gun smith you stole the Polar Star from in the beginning of the game, and he turns it into an unholy monster of a gun that never needs to be upgraded. It almost seems like you're intended to do that, given how damn tough the final bosses are. I can't imagine not doing that.

Same reason I bought La-Mulana when the rerelease finally came out a few years back. I watched DeceasedCrab play through the whole thing like, a decade ago. That game is fuuuuun. Even though I accidentally activated hard mode after the first world and the game was a real mother of a monster to beat Xp

I guess I'm not much of an indie cynic. I enjoyed Bastion well enough. Not enough to play through it twice, but it's an okay game. Same goes for Fez. I just wish it didn't have so much legitimately cryptological bullshit in it. I love Meat Boy though. Is very fun, especially if you try out stages with the different characters. Much less just plain sadistic than I Wanna Be the Guy. That game is just a dick for the sake of it.

To that earlier comment, Braid is pompous annoying shit, can't stand that game it's so full of itself and just not fun. And no I never played Gish. Limbo is actually pretty solid though and I do own that one. I have to agree the boss rush stuff is so damned annoying and uncool, was then, still now, it should be an optional menu based thing like Castlevania SOTN wannabes from Konami did as a side toy for people into that. Forcing it sucks, sucked in the 80s, sucks now.

Now Shovel Knight, I can't figure it out, but I really can't get into it. It seems enjoyable if I can bother to turn it on, but it's just not fun enough to me to actually do just that, turn it on. I did for a few days, cleared like 3 of the bosses and the fluff on the map between them and never went back. I'm lost for why so people flip their shit over it as I don't get the attraction unless you're some die hard 8bit fan, deep into Mega Man (and clones), or are some hipster just trying to be cool. I probably should sell the game to be honest as is just sits there on my small 3DS shelf of games which amounts to barely over a dozen at this point though I've had quite a lot more they had no replay value once done or lost their appeal and were ditched.

Well that's good, kind of surprised you're not an 8bit or mega man fan though. Wouldn't have pegged you as the third one. Seems anytime I see reviews or comments about it, you get the comparisons to 8bit, Mega Man, or something of that nature, and then the wanna be cool kids into retro for retro sake.

Wow...You guys are harsh. Braid, Cave Story, Dust, Fez, and Shovel Knight are all really fun games. Of those, Braid is probably my least favorite, but it is still solid from a gameplay perspective. Fez, however, is pretty much perfect. (I haven't spent a lot if time with Super Meat Boy or Bastion yet; so I can't comment on those. They seem fun, though...)

I suppose I should clarify. There are three boss rooms fought immediately after each other at the end of Cave Story, but you've never fought those bosses up to that point. While it's certainly difficult, it's not a Mega Man-style end of game boss rush. I actually don't recall Cave Story having a proper Boss Rush mode of any sort, come to think of it. Perhaps I'm remembering wrong though.

I've heard Dust is so fun! Is it truly so good? I've always been slightly dubious, but It'd be a good excuse to use the last 200 points in mah Wii account to just put another 10 bucks on there to get Dust.

I should also probably specify my opinion on Fez. Fez is a fantastic and clever game if you don't try and 100% it, and just do the main story/default ending. Trying to 100% it is an immensely difficult and taxing procedure that I did not find fun at all.

I am a Mega Man fan, but not rabid. I love some entries but I'm not obsessive with the series.

Same with 8bit games. Enjoy them, but not die hard.
