No worries, I'm also one of those losers who enjoyed Alpha Protocol. Though I also loved Morrowind.

Morrowind had weird MMO mechanics, but the writing was good, the story was solid, and the open world elements worked well. It also did level scaling in a much more subtle and integrated manner.

I haven't finished Morrowind, but what I played of it was far better than Oblivion.

Tales of Innocence R

I finally got the last party member (Kyu Kyu, who is adorable) and the boat! I'm not exactly sure how far into the game that puts me, but some progress is better than none :P

Alpha Protocol was great, even though Pistols were OP as hell. One of the things it did that I wish other games did was the flowing conversation system; you'd highlight the type of response and when your turn to speak came up it would pick that one; no getting to sit there and wonder what the right choice is and leaving a bunch of dead air in the conversation.

And Morrowind was amazing. I still haven't forgiven Bethesda for removing spears, and the province was really unique and a nice change of pace from the standard fantasy land tropes.

Word. Spears were the best. Of the things I don't like about Oblivion, the lack of spears is an absolute travesty. My Argonian spearfisher is no more.

I've only played an hour of Oblivion so far. So opinions probably aren't fair yet. But I can say it's not as IMMEDIATELY compelling as Skyrim was for me.

The AI doesn't feel good. Like, as soon as I got out in the open world a couple of strangers just started attacking me hard and followed me for miles when I tried to just run away. Like, swam after me. I've read that the enemy-scaling thing can feel pretty brutal in the very early game.

And the pop-up (even w/ visuals maxed) is horrible.

Both of the above may well be easily fixable with mods. Actually, I'm considering just modding the hell out of this game because why not? I'd like to like this game; and I'd love for it to look as pretty as possible. And sadly, Skyrim may well have ruined many other RPG's for me, so...

Oh, but shouts to the character creation system here. Good stuff.

Modded to hell Oblivion might be a good game, give it a shot. But keep in mind, my dislike of Oblivion has to do with the original vanilla game that Bethesda produced. If the community made a good game out of Oblivion via modding, that's another story. But that's also kind of a different game at that point.

Modding definitely fixes a lot of what's wrong with the game. Doncha just love how everyone has the face of a potato?
