RPG Progress Report
Re: RPG Progress Report
Oblivion is fun, but it has some issues. The enemy and item scaling is weird, and many character builds get easily outclassed. I had to mod the shit out of the game to really get into it.
Re: RPG Progress Report
Here's how you play the game, noise:
Hit things with your sword until they die.
Easy.

Re: RPG Progress Report
And don't hit things with magic. That's largely useless.

And whatever you do, don't make athletics or acrobatics primary skills.

Oblivion is my favorite Elder Scrolls game and this is one series where I've played them all. It had the best side quests and it just sucked me in when I played it.

Re: RPG Progress Report
I totally agree. I found Oblivion to be... just vapid. The world design was bland, seeking and closing Oblivion Gates was incredibly repetitive, and the enemy auto-scaling was just dumb. Yeah I know you can fix that with a mod, but if I have to mod a game for it to be good, then that says volumes right there. But hey, if people enjoy the game, more power to them. It was better than Daggerfall at least. Don't forget to buy dat horse armor.Xeogred wrote:I'd give Oblivion a 2/10 or so.
PLAY KING'S FIELD.
Re: RPG Progress Report
Yeah, I'm not even kidding.
Here's a funny story about Oblivion. When I was playing it one day I decided to move my 360 around without thinking, while the game was in and running. This caused the game to crash and the disc got scratched up and never worked again. Of course many other friends had it, so I was able to borrow another copy of it that worked just fine for them and... that other disc also wouldn't work on my 360. I don't know if it was severe corrupted data or what, but fate told me I wasn't allowed to play Oblivion again. But frankly it took like a day later for me to be thankful for that.
Skyrim is the first and only Elder Scrolls I've played that was okay, because when I swing at stuff I actually hit stuff. I just can't stand dice roll mechanics in real time completely player controlled combat.
That's only one of my gripes with it but I won't bother with the laundry list, lol. I seriously hate it.

Re: RPG Progress Report
Sounds like TES games just aren't for you, then. But Oblivion was the first of them to have "you always hit stuff that the model of your weapon impacts with".

And I won't lose sleep over that.
You might be right, it might be memories of Morrowind of me having to swing 20 times at the face of an enormous TMNT morphed fat rat before I could hit it once.
I put in over 100 hours combined (not much compared to most) on Skyrim though. So they finally turned a nice corner there for me and I'll probably check out the next ones. I enjoyed Fallout 3. And I also sunk 100 some hours into Fallout 4 and got the platinum. Despite all that I still feel like I can tear into Bethesda when it comes to their writing/characters, lol. It's generally really bad to me but I enjoy the gameplay in these.
I think New Vegas blows them out of the water though and is my favorite Fallout in general. I really wish Obisidan could get back to doing more standard stuff like this or something, though I'm sure people are loving their isometric throwbacks. I just don't know if I can get into that stuff either. But some people like Chris Avellone have left Obisdian now (he apparently helped work on the new Prey), so who knows if Obsidian is the same thesedays.
Hell I liked Alpha Protocol a lot actually. So for me to trash Bethesda a bit here and say I enjoyed Alpha Protocol, take that all for what you will...
