I'm more than happy to share.

My Grandfather Harry married my Grandmother Helen when he was seventeen. Helen was eighteen when they were wed. He was about to be shipped out to Korea to fight in WWII, and he wanted to get married before leaving the States. So after graduating high school, his family and Helen's family went to the Cook County Court House and sealed the deal. His parents said they were making a big mistake and that the marriage wouldn't last. They were married for more than sixty five years.

It was love at first sight.

One day after school my Grandfather had had enough of being shy and had the gumption to approach Helen after the school bell rang. Now this may sound like a fairy tale, but I assure you the events I am about to describe are all true.

During lunch, music was played, and the kids danced with each other. This was common all across Chicago during the time. My Grandfather was a talented musician, and the only break he would take from the piano was to dance with Helen during lunch. Finally, one day he walked up to my grandmother and asked "May I please have the pleasure of walking you home? If you say 'no' I will be forever heartbroken and you will see my sad face everyday after school, sitting on the street, wishing I could be holding your hand".

Of course my Grandmother was smitten, and that was that. Never a raised voice, never an argument, just bliss. To this day I strive to be like my Grandfather. I never yell at my wife, never curse in front of her, and I'm always mindful of my manners. When I come home from work, I kiss my wife. Before I rest my head, I tell my wife I love her and kiss her again. The little things he taught me have made life worth living.

One of these days I look forward to passing on what I've been taught. Might be to my own child, to an adopted child, or a foster kid. All I can say is that being a role model and leaving a positive impression on a kid is a life goal of mine. Lord knows my Grandfather would be proud if I can accomplish that goal.
