My only complaint about DQ Swords is that taking down the final boss nearly destroyed my right forearm. But that's due to a personal issue. Many many years ago, a chow ripped my right forearm to pieces, and it required surgery to fix. It's never been quite right since then. So something like repetitive motion via slicing a hundred times in various directions furiously killing a boss, yeah that will set it off.

Dragon Quest V is a decent RPG. It's alright. It just bored me compared to Dragon Quest IV. Primarily DQV's plot is meh and did nothing for me.

I can honestly say that I had no idea that Swords existed until just now.

RE: DQV vs. Others - It mostly comes down to personal preference in the end. I know a lot of people hype up V but every game from III to IX has been excellent. Sure, they are old fashioned in many ways. But no one does old fashioned JRPG as well as Dragon Quest does it.

I bet getting the Japanese TV games version of Swords I mentioned would be pretty fun if you didn't want or have a Wii. Not sure if it costs a bundle or would have some weird fit working on US tv but I doubt it.

Final Fight is...over-rated.

I give it credit for being one of the first 16 bit Era's Beat-Em Up and for Capcom reusing many of the characters in their Street Fighter games, but...

The game is cheap as all hell, even on the easiest difficulty. You have so little health that enemies can kill you in just a few hits. Some enemies can kill you on one hit. The game loves to sandwich you and forces you to use your special, which drains your HP. When holding a weapon, it is nearly impossible to hit people unless you are perfectly on the same plane. While doing a combo, enemies will come up and hit you which you can't avoid. They will hit you while charging from off screen. They will jump on you while you are down. The enemies move almost triple as fast as you. Most enemies have the same health as you. The levels are insanely long with hard as hell bosses at the end.

It's not even close. Streets of Rage is better in every single way.

The Beat-Em Up Genre is my second favorite genre. I love them to death and I know what makes a great beat-em up. The original Final Fight is not a good beat-em up. It's been a while since I have been so disappointed in a game. I was expecting so much better than this. I haven't given up yet, but I might in the future.

Final Fight...is a bad game.

It's just a boring game. You walk and punch shit. Some nice graphics, but none of the settings or enemies are memorable. Streets of Rage, in comparison, is just charismatic and atmospheric as all hell.

Final Fight was a trend setter, but I agree it was quickly one-upped by its contemporaries.

Final Fight defense force, attack!

There are no enemies that can kill you in one hit, not even bosses. The closest are the Andores in the cage fight which can kill you in two hits if they grab you. Since this is unlikely, you'll go down in 3-4 hits in the vast majority of situations.

The game loves to sandwich you and forces you to use your special, which drains your HP.

The whole game is based on the idea that you must put all the enemies on one side of the screen. You should throw enemies, use coverage moves (Haggar's air) and finish off your combos with crowd control in mind, not damage. Keep in mind that different enemies rise from the ground at different speeds!

While doing a combo, enemies will come up and hit you which you can't avoid.

Why are you using a combo when it's not safe to do so? It's hard to complain about the combo when enemies walk into it if you put them all on the same side.

They will hit you while charging from off screen.

A fair complain, though, in practice the handful of spots where the fat guys do this end up being a very small part of the game and easily memorized.

The enemies move almost triple as fast as you.

I don't think this is true, I think only Roxy/Posion moves faster and that's kind of her thing. Js move very fast when they do their "attack", but their actual movement is pretty slow.

Personally, I think Final Fight is a good game with three flaws:

1) You can get knocked down two times in a row, making the game too punishing.
It seems they designed the game so that you can recover against every single enemy in a vaccum, not realizing that another enemy could attack a third of a second later and knock you down again.

2) The desperation move lets some attacks in, when the character should be invulnerable.

3) Bosses are very limited in their scope and follow simply patterns so they compensate with very high damage and priority frames. Better boss design would have made them less binary.

As far as Streets of Rage 2 goes, it's a good game though extremely long and with a massive flaw: Every single enemy in the game except bosses can be stun-locked with your normal combo. And bosses can be killed very easily by spamming your special attack which means there's an easy out for every single challenge in the game. It's a good game too, but I don't think either holds a candle to Capcom's latter efforts.

I remember really enjoying Final Fight CD as a kid, but when I palyed Final Fight in an arcade recently I thought it was terrible.

So I have 1 of 2 theories

1. I played Final Fight as a kid before Streets of Rage, and Streets of Rage makes Final Fight look terrible in comparison (plus I was a kid and more easily pleased)

or

2. I played Final Fight CD and that version is better in some way? I doubt this is the case, but it's worth checking I guess.

As far as I know, Final Fight CD is a good port, but is a bit downgraded graphically and there are less enemies on the screen at once.

The arranged soundtrack is great, though.

Yeah, I was fixin' to say, if you are being surrounded by enemies it's because you aren't using your throw to properly keep the enemies on one side.

If the enemies didn't surround you, the game would be a cake walk. Attacking you from both sides is the only way the enemy can gain an advantage against you.

While I do think Streets of Rage 2 is a really good game, I think it's also way too easy in comparison to Final Fight. I was waiting for a friend of mine who works at a game store to get off work, and they had SoR2 in the demo unit. In the 15 or so minutes I waited for him to get off, I made it to the final stage and by the time he got off I hadn't died a single time. And I haven't played SoR2 (or any SoR) in at least 5 years.
