This is correct.
THERE ARE NO BAD DRAGON QUEST GAMES!!!
*Ahem* Excuse me, got carried away there...
Some are dated and some are WAY too long but there are no bad ones!

Basically it's like this...
Bad news: If you've played one Dragon Quest, you've played them all.
Good news: If you've loved one Dragon Quest, you'll love them all.

And people wonder why there was a collective outcry about the idea of
Dragon Quest IX becoming an action-RPG. Eww. Save that for the spinoffs.
And of course, then they had to go make that MMORPG monstrosity. I've even heard it's pretty terrible! So... I guess that's one bad
DQ game.

That's just a sign of the times I think, as turn based RPGs have gained the perception of being backed into a niche corner. It's taking a recognizable IP and trying to appeal to a broader audience with it.
It's probably not something they should do though. Someone like me who doesn't care about Dragon Quest isn't suddenly going to go out and buy Dragon Quest IX because they changed the formula. Unless it's somehow a truly stand-out game you're not getting any new fans and alienating the old ones.

There already is a real time action Dragon Quest RPG:
My unpopular opinions about that one...
It's more of an RPG than you think.
It's actually a really great game.
It's better than Dragon Quest V.

He still had me with the last bit, DQ5 bored me compared to 4 and I never went far with it.
Swords was fantastic on Wii. So many whiners upset it wasn't a traditional RPG but it has still many of the elements and it was a lot of fun when I had it. It's actually based on a japanese TV games deal with a big plastic sword on it.

I did not like Swords at all. The control scheme was terrible.

I enjoyed my time with Swords, but I ended up dropping it for whatever reason. Probably the usual "I got a new game" one.

You're not the first person I've read say as such. Well, I had no problem with the controls personally.
My only complaint about DQ Swords is that taking down the final boss nearly destroyed my right forearm. But that's due to a personal issue. Many many years ago, a chow ripped my right forearm to pieces, and it required surgery to fix. It's never been quite right since then. So something like repetitive motion via slicing a hundred times in various directions furiously killing a boss, yeah that will set it off.
Dragon Quest V is a decent RPG. It's alright. It just bored me compared to Dragon Quest IV. Primarily DQV's plot is meh and did nothing for me.
