But he is somewhat right on the lack of risk taking for AAA and physical media games. But at least there are other options. I do find most of the time my taste do more align with eastern developers. Part of the reason I like WiiU is its more Japanese flavor then the counterparts.

Yes triple AAA titles do not take many risks, because there are millions and millions of dollars pumped into them. They want to make sure they get back on their investment, which isn't a horrible concept. The more money you put in, the more you want to insure you get more back.

And yes, you are totally right, there is a definite difference in style between East and West games that can be attributed to a lot of things, including cultural influences. I very much enjoy games from all different regions, because there is a definitive style attached to that.

Heck, there are game development competitions that give developers a theme or overall idea and what gets created from each is drastically different, even if they come from the same region.

The thing is, people game for many different reasons. Some enjoy the diversion of rapid-fire competitive play, while others look for intellectual and thought provoking ideas. Here on this site, you can see people who place a high priority on high-score based games, while others look for story driven narratives.

I really wanted to just stress that the discussion in this thread was really turning into a black and white argument, which is shame. Numerous factors lead into what people do and why they do it and it can not be attributed to any one particular concept. Some people like safe things and others don't. Why is up to the individual person. Consumers vote with their money and they are speaking right now and the market shows what is and is not successful, not because they are being coerced into it, but because the majority wants that. Will that change? Of course it will. The market is always changing.

On the N64, games like Turok, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, WWF No Mercy, Fighters Destiny etc actually made me think the N64 was pretty hardcore and "cool". Then the Gamecube was announced and Capcom came out and said the Resident Evil franchise would be exclusive to GameCube, starting with a remake of the first one and later the ling anticipated Zero. There were other a"adult" games too.

Nintendo sells titles like REs and GoldenEye but still considered "kiddy", yet Playstation sells Spyro and Crash Bandicoot but is considered a mature console. I can only explain this by what others have said, the whole brand is advertised by Nintendo to target younger children and the opposite on Sony's side.

On the one hand you can kind of get where the "kiddy" thing comes from if you compare the cast of smash bros to the cast of playstation all stars.....but if you do that you will also notice how sad it is that sony hasn't been able to establish a cast of iconic characters in the 20 years they've been in the industry

But it's not like Nintendo doesn't know that all the kids in the 80s and 90s have grown up. They know that adults are into their consoles, probably more adults than kids. They probably don't care that there's a group of people that deem their consoles too childish for them just because they're in high school and desperately have to prove how much of a grown up they are.

I think that's a gross mischaracterizatiin/overgeneralization of their image problem.

I agree. Basically Nintendo has the image of the console that doens't get all the games you want. No yearly sport updates, no latest FPS game with DLC maps.

Even in the gamecube era when the cube was strong enough to compete with the other consoles they still didn't get a lot of games that every other console got (GTA namely).

And that's probably because in the mind of 3rd party publishers, they just can't sell games on a Nintendo console....though imo that's just sad and they are just admiting how worse their software is. On the Wii Nintendo's output was outstanding, even their "minigame collections" were great fun titles, but all 3rd parties tried to do is make the cheapest games possible to maximize profits from people who didn't know better.

Well I was half kidding. I was gonna make the last sentence blue, but, whatever.

I look at it like this: I'm glad that Nintendo consoles don't get all the same games that the Playstation and Xbox gets. I think we've gotten too use to every 3rd party title being ported to EVERY console. Back in the 90's, if you wanted to play Mario, Donkey Kong, and Kirby you needed a Nintendo console. If you wanted to play Sonic, Virtua, Shining, you needed a Sega console. If you wanted to play Gran Turismo, Crash, etc you needed a Playstation.

If Nintendo consoles today had all the same games that the Playstation and Xbox consoles have, then all the major home consoles would do pretty much the same thing. What would be good about that? It's the reason why most of us own a SNES and a Genesis, an N64 and a PS1 and a Saturn, etc.

Today, there's an almost nonexistent line between the Xbox One and the PS4. You get pretty much the same thing with either. It comes down to controller preference and the very few exclusives each console will have. At least with the U, you get a radically different system, and more of a real choice. For the people that want it all, then you have to get a Wii U and a PS4/Xbox One. Much like how you had to get a SNES and a Genesis. So, I don't really look at any of it as a problem. I'm glad the distinction is there.

You also forget back in the original days too if you wanted to play Spyro or Crash you needed Sony(one of the few series that was iconic to Sony until they let them slip to nintendo as gba, and later other titles on ds, and wii....)

Well, hang on. GTA was exclusive to the PS2 (and kinda PC) for ages before Xbox finally got their hands on the games. Gamecube did, for a while, get plenty of poplar games that the other consoles got. It got TimeSplitters, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, SSX, Burnout 1 and 2, WWE games, Fifa, Medal of Honor, Rainbow Six, Soul Calibur 2, Resident Evil 4, Call of Duty, Def Jam, Prince of Persia etc.
Own: Mega Drive, Saturn, Dreamcast, Playstation 1, Playstation 2, Playstation 3, Playstation 4, Playstation 5, PS Vita, Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, Gamecube, Wii U, Game Boy Advance, DS, 3DS, Switch, Switch 2, Xbox, Xbox 360

I will continue to post the way I do bogus, if you dont like it I cant help that. I can not very well back up what I said because its not published online and you know that. How do you expect me to give solid proof of conversations from 2 months to 12 years ago? Some of the stuff I say about how companies attack others like the classic kiddie tag Nintendo got isnt going to be admitted to being done, you just had to be there or know someone who was that is fine off print talking about it. Im seriously asking that because I get fed up with people questioning stuff I know is a fact as it was discussed.

I truly feel the crap Im taking in this thread is because its a pro-Nintendo very pro-WiiU thread and Im not being nice and dismissing the issues of the WiiU. I went into it with all the hopes they got it right and have had a dust catcher for most of its life and thats why I post the way I do. I really like the system and what it does but dislike how it has been handled and will always continue to be. Sure I guess if I liked Nintendos archaic network policies and download games more I could totally get by with it but I do not, I got started at the end of 85 with the NES and I will always prefer physical media. I still very much love the company and the 3DS, will get the New3DS but Im seriously not going to buy another system of theirs again at home blindly without seeing proof of support because as long as they have two tiers going I wont be at a loss for first party experiences.

Pep: Thank you for picking up on the fact Im talking about the games being dismissed on physical media. That was the point, theres far less risk taking and variety here on physical media which is why I cut the line in those posts about that and saying the variety gets shoved off on download services and handhelds. Perhaps its also a reason why you see a lot more sales in portable gaming in many genres and styles of games.
