All I have to say is that the final level in Bloodlines is one of the best final levels in the entire series. Damn it was epic.

So I took a crack at Castlevania II: Simon's Quest for the NES and impressions are not good. Symphony of the Night is nothing like this, I hope? (in regards to Metroidvania)

Nah. Symphony is Gothic Super Metroid with RPG elements.

CV2 is Konami dipping their toe in the waters of the Metroid style; this was that era when the sequel made major changes compared to the original (see Zelda, Final Fantasy, and even Mario in the US). Symphony gets it right; it plays like Super Metroid in that you make your way through as you can and come back to areas later when you get some new movement power, and for the most part it feels fairly organic.

Symphony coined the -vania half of Metroidvania.

So I completed the fan re-translation and PSP versions of SotN.

The PSP version is definitely great. I'm still bitter though that Konami only released it on the PSP. What the hell is that all about? It's the ONLY time Rondo of Blood has been officially localized, and the fact that the voice acting matches between both games is awesome. They put the effort into translating Rondo, and recording new voice overs for both games... but only released it on the PSP? The Dracula X Chronicles DEFINITELY should have been released on a home consoles, even if it was just digital only (PSN and whatnot). Why the hell not?

So the PSP version of SotN is great, but I hate playing on the PSP. Not that I hate the PSP, but the game wasn't designed for a handheld. And I know that I can play it on a TV with a PSP Slim (that's what I was doing) but the picture only fills about half the screen. I can zoom in with the XRGB Framemeister, but it's a blurry mess. Even not zoomed in, it looks pretty awful. Definitely NOT how those games should be experienced.

I was gonna start up the Saturn version, but it's basically unplayable with the XRGB Framemeister. I never new that the Saturn version switches resolutions constantly. The problem with the Framemeister is that it takes a few seconds to resync when the resolution changes. The resolution changes when you press start for the menu, and again when you press L for the map, then again to back out of the map, then again to resume the game. So going into the menu for something sucks enough, but checking the map is a nightmare (as if it wasn't bad enough having to press start then L). So yeah, unplayable IMO. I'll have to wait until my basement is back in order so I can play it on a CRT.

So yeah, this is just me bitching about stuff up to this point.

Until I get around to playing the Saturn version, I loaded up my oldest SotN save for PS1. I put a decent amount of time into it. I was on my way to a 100% save file but haven't touched it in years.

Do any of you consider using continues in Simon's Quest as legitimately beating the game? Since you continue the exact same point you left off, it feels like just pumping in extra quarters in an arcade game. The only penalty is basically losing hearts/experience, which can easily be brought up again by grinding a bit.

I feel there's no way I can really "die", or even go back to the beginning of the mansion... so it's more like a game of figuring out where to go and trudging on until you win.
