Not actually necessary though. Look at playing PSX games on a PS3. It has a virtual memory card system - if you're not trying to use an existing memory card, you don't need anything extra. If you are, then you get their USB memory card adapter and transfer your saves.
Plugging in the old controllers isn't necessary because the Dual Shock 3 includes the same functionality (and more). It does screw over specialty controllers...but not all would work in modern setups anyway (like light guns)
I'd assume that the system will have a port or three to attach other accessories/add ons to. They could just offer a Gamecube port accessory (and make ridiculous margins on it), and possibly offer a "classic" controller in the form of a wireless Gamecube controller to boot.
They'd probably still lose money on something like that. I really cannot see much point in BC for Gamecube on this new console anyways. That memory card transfer adapter and controller adapter sounds pretty messy for a feature maybe .5% of users will use at that kind of complexity and barrier of entry. It's an HD console and as far as we know it's not going to upscale old games. Yeah, there's some convenience in not having to switch consoles around, but you'd probably want the Wii U hooked up to an HD TV (if you have one), and even with progressive scan most Gamecube games look better on an SDTV than an HDTV IMO.

Well hell. This thread just moves too damn fast for me to keep up with it, I'll use that as my excuse for missing it.

Eh, I doubt it. Making room for it on the actual system? Sure, could be a pain. Selling a device that'd probably cost them $2 to manufacture for $20-30? That'd make a fair bit of money.
It just seems to me like the bigger reason they wouldn't include Gamecube compatibility is not that it'd be prohibitively hard/expensive to do...but more so that they could sell the titles over again.

I'd guess either this, or that to most people it's just not important enough to bother with.
But it seems like it would be easy to do, if it can run Wii games than it likely could do GC without much trouble.

I don't think there's much incentive for Nintendo to put GCN compatibility in the Wii U. There are already 22 million actual GCNs in existence, and they are very cheap. Plus there's 80 million Wii's, which can play GCN games. There is already far more availability than demand in the GCN market, there's no reason to make a third system that can play Super Mario Sunshine. What we need is more ways to buy GCN games, not hardware.

Really I can't imagine anyone interested in GC games not having one yet, so yeah, no reason for them to bother.
In other news Steel Battalion is still MIA. If SB and Codename D don't make it to TGS I'm going to start thinking they're vaporware.

It's more the convenience of letting you play the games with one console happily hooked up over HDMI than whether or not you could play them at all. Same reason I liked having my phat PS3 hooked up in the living room.

You should have seen the PSN outtage thread on neoGAF.

Exactly. Besides, you think nintendo would miss an opportunity to resell you games you already own through the shop channel?
