Damn Lordofduct, that's quite a respond. I guess living in a congested city full of pretentious fatties has driven you a bit insane. Don't go killing anymore SUV drivers now you hear. Let's be civilized and just slap them silly.

meh, I don't feel like it. And seeing as I type long obligatory posts on a daily basis, I don't like having to grammar and spell check them. I write them in a few minutes.

Yeah, LA made me angry. Very very very very angry. So angry I was literally going to mow people down and blow shit up, I couldn't deal with it. So I did the responsible thing, quit the job and drove back to the right coast. That reminds me, you should of seen the scene the day I left at the oil change shop... poor lady behind me about had a heart attack.

Lordofduct, maybe you should get GTA IV and take your rage out on some virtual people, mow them down and blow them up to your heart's content. Yeah, I know it's NY and not LA but still. Anyway, you just cannot let people get to you man. There will always be assholes anywhere and everywhere you go man, just more in congested cities. Regardless, hope the East Coast suites you better than the damn West Side.

Yesterday I say I have no plans of getting rid of my sports car, Today I'm actually considering it. Fucking Bipolar bullshit.

We will all praise this man for saving our lives and buy him a mountain of stuffed animals.

So how much are you guys paying per gallon? $4~?

We're paying £1.11~ per litre. (that's roughly £5. per gallon, AKA twice as much as you're paying)

I drive a 1200CC Vauxhall Corsa. I get 50 miles to the gallon. If I didn't get that economy I couldn't justify driving. simple as.

Some simple tips for getting more economy:

Don't do short trips (ie less than ten minutes round trip). Engine wastes more fuel getting up to temperature. Try and save all your errands for a bunch of journeys lumped into one.

Don't idle in traffic jams. If you're not going to be moving for a long time turn your engine off. If traffic is moving erratically (ie starting stopping starting stopping etc) then just creep along as slow as possible rather than accelerating and then stopping (doesn't wear your brakes out as much either). Accelerating uses more fuel (obviously) than traveling at a consistent speed.

Sorry if these tips are obvious but I've met plenty of people who didn't have a clue of the above and it's helped them squeeze a few extra miles per gallon.

I haven't read the thread, but here in Portugal I had something happen to me. I never saw so many people taking the train from Porto to Lisbon. First I was just amazed and thought it was simply because we had a long weekend (a religious holiday on Thursday, some people took the Friday off and so went to see their family or something). The guy selling the tickets replied "The gas is too expensive."

I don't know which of the factors was the dominant one, but its 300 km from Porto to Lisbon, and it's the first time I go to the ticket shop at 17:30 and not only both trains departing around 18:00 (one that is slightly faster leaves at 17:47 and the other at 17:52) are sold out, but the next one as well, that they put a special service running (they doubled up on the train leaving at 18:47). I went in the doubled up one, and it was still quite full (not completely though).
I was baffled. Fortunately I had my DS lite with me so the extra wait didn't affect me so much.

Ivo.
