Go with Miracle Warriors for console. It's a really creative old JRPG - perhaps the first released in North America as well. I have yet to finish it but enjoy what I've played.
Handheld is a toss-up. I like TitS the best.

Without hesitation - Ys I & II Chronicles+. A phenomenal set of action-RPGs that laid the groundwork for the genre.

Play a retro game. Seriously though, I'd go with Final Fantasy X. Not a game I adored, but you'd probably dig it.

Oof. Some stupidly good games listed there. Dragon Quest IX is my favorite of the bunch. Incredibly addictive.

The Witch and the Hundred Knight (PS4)
Final Fantasy X (PS4 remaster)
Moe Chronicle (Vita)
Final Fantasy Explorers (3DS)
Tokyo Twilight Ghost Hunters (Vita)

Of those...yeah, get through FFX. I don't know if the remaster keeps the old voice acting. I hope it does though. Just so you have to suffer through Tidus' forced laughter. Just like I did.

Exhum, old buddy, old pal, I have no idea! Pretty much all of these came out after my interested had waned...except Tactics Ogre, though I haven't played LUCT. But if Tactics Ogre: The Knight of Lodis was anything to go by, you're doing yourself a disservice by not playing it. I say Tactics Ogre.

It's all the same. It's essentially an uprez along with the International content. All the original localization is still there.

I'm sure it's not as bad as either Arc Rise Fantasia or Chaos Wars.

Anyway, as pertaining to the Persona games, I like the style of Persona 2 the best, and those games are quite excellent, to boot. They're a lot more polished than the original game, and they do away with the first-person dungeons. I still don't know that they're well-designed, but the games ooze atmosphere...

...so of course I haven't finished them! What were you expecting?
