Together Retro: Mortal Kombat Trilogy
Re: Together Retro: Mortal Kombat Trilogy
The AI in the SNES versions of MK3 and UMK3 is straight up broken. You can leave the difficulty set very easy. One round, the AI will be kicking your ass. You die and come back, and then they'll just stand there and let you beat them. Again, while leaving the difficulty on ONE setting. IIRC, other console ports of these games are broken in the same way.

The AI in MKII is mean

Yeah, and it's very aggressive. I played yesterday until my thumb hurt and switched out the controller I was using for one that was less worn on the d-pad. Instant improvement, though the game still kicks my ass.
Throws are my biggest downfall, though I have noticed another issue: Scorpion's teleport punches can screw up if you get too close to a corner, meaning he will go into the motion but will then fall back into where he was standing. This reduces its effectiveness significantly and gimps him a bit, as I don't believe other characters have this issue with their teleports. I'll keep playing. Hopefully I will get better at blocking and throw defense soon.
Re: Together Retro: Mortal Kombat Trilogy
The biggest problem is the AI nails frame perfect stuff way too often. That and the fact that I will never get used to having a block button; I was raised on Street Fighter and that's where all my reflexes are.

That rising forward jumpkick I occasionally see that repeatedly punishes me agrees. I don't even know how the computer does that.
Re: Together Retro: Mortal Kombat Trilogy
I've been testing my might.

Besides a little bit better sound clarity, the sega cd version of MK is nearly identical to the genesis counterpart. Not that much a fan of the snes version as for some reason it doesn't feel as gritty, and I like my MK games gritty.
Still absolutely love the music during the "choose your character" sequence. It really sets the tone for the game. Finished MK with all the characters, and moving onto II today.
I also finished MK vs. DC yesterday with each side. It's far from perfect, but I don't get all the hate for the game. Injustice: Gods among us is leaps and bounds better, but I still find lots of fun in DC vs MK.
Dark Kahn is stupid though.

Re: Together Retro: Mortal Kombat Trilogy
Gotta love MK. I have all the old ones. I did just get rid of MK2 for the Saturn, because it just sucks compared to the 32x version. I have tried MK for the Sega CD and am about ready to get rid of it too because of the load times during the Shang fight. I always pick the Genesis one. Back when UMK3 came out it was the reason I got a Saturn. As far as Trilogy itself I find both the 64 and Saturn versions to be good for different reasons but love them both. I am outta town right now, but when I get back home I will playing the MK games again.
Re: Together Retro: Mortal Kombat Trilogy
Six MK games beaten, all I have left is Mortal Kombat on the 360 (2011?) and Armageddon on the Wii.
Boy, the Genesis games would be so much better with a pause button. I've had to reset a few times because I HAD to use the bathroom.
MKII adds new characters, new finishing moves, but is pretty thin soup. If I threw a MK party* with multiple tv's and consoles, plus the movies playing in the theater and MK themed food, I would not recommend the MKII room.
*I'll probably do this in a few months or next year. I could easily have five rooms, each with their own consoles, and play the movie (only the first one). The food options would be a lot of fun to play with as well. Scorpions are edible...Calf hearts are edible...Throw some dry ice in a blueberry punch and you have a Sub-Zero cocktail...The options for creativity are all over the place.

This is a bad-ass idea.

Still don't know if I could eat a scorpion though.
Re: Together Retro: Mortal Kombat Trilogy
After playing the game for while during the weekend I completely forgot that some of my characters that I main (as well as some of the cast) got some tweaks or new special moves. Kung Lao seemed to have been given a double teleport (D,D,U), Along with his standard teleport (D,U). The former doesn't seem too useful. What is useful though seems to be his spin top special. It moves forward in MKT as oppose to being stationary in UMK3. Its a useful special as it pops up the opponent on hit and sets up for some nasty juggle damage.
Scoprion also appears to have received a new special. A flying punch (QCF, HP) that looks nearly identical to his infamous teleport punch (QCB, HP). Appears to be quite useful as you can potentially combo his Spear into it if the punch hits, very much like you would with his Tele-Punch. On block though it appears to be insanely negative, again much like his Tele-Punch.
Anyone care to share their impressions on the games biggest addition to the system mechanics? I'm referring to the AGGRESSOR system of course. Don't like it personally. Feels to tacked on and not alot of thought put into it...
