What does the term "shooter" mean to you at first glance?

Shooter = My first thought would be "First Person Shooter". (Such as DOOM or Halo)

Shooter = My first thought is both FPS and TPS, considering their frequency in modern gaming.

Shooter = My first thought is of shoot 'em up or SHMUP, that being a 2D scrolling spaceship shooting arcade experience. (Such as Gradius or Tyrian 2000)

Shooter = My first thought is of any kind of game in which the player shoots something at something, with no genre affiliation whatsoever.

What shooter means to me is that person using the term is not a hardcore gamer and it could mean any number of things. Like if somebody says they're playing Sega or Nintendo.
So to me a shooter does not exist. It's not a genre at all, besides that it is game that may involve some kind of shooting, which is probably about a quarter of all of the games ever made.

It is a root genre that feeds into subgenres. RPG and racing are examples of other root genres with many subgenres as well. Sites like Gamerankings and GameFAQS use these systems to organize great swaths of games and so can anyone else. That has nothing to do with how hardcore a gamer is, but everything to do with understanding broader spectrums of games in general.
