If you're talking about the old DOS RTS game, yes it's quite good. But I played it already back in 1997. I'm glad it still holds up today though.Tanooki wrote:Seriously though try out Dune 2 using that Dune Legacy program as you will not regret it.

Re: Recommend an RTS?
Since Microsoft no longer supports or sells XP does that classify it as an abandonware OS?
PLAY KING'S FIELD.
Re: Recommend an RTS?
Nobody really cares if you install a "free" version of WinXP.. just make sure it's not permanently connected online. I wouldn't trust that OS with the swarms of malware out there.

Good call but I tried that. cnc-comm.com had a link to that with some steps to try for win8 and it still bombed. That's why I was thinking they redid something with it between 8 and 8.1 which is why I called it quits. If it's not that I may just have a combo of the OS and the right parts/drivers that just make the game unusable.
What you have there will work definitely on windows 7 and has been tested as such. I don't have that laptop anymore, handed it off or I'd go with it.

If you have access to C&C The First Decade you might have a better shot at getting those working; when I reformatted and stuck Windows 8.1 on my machine shortly after 8.1 went GA I reinstalled using The First Decade and then running the community patch for The First Decade. I think I later replaced C&C Gold with the updated fan one but Tiberian Sun is still TFD + fan patch.

I had it last year used from a goodwill, but it wasn't in good shape and the disc took a crap so it's gone. I've read that one is a bit less pissy with win8.1 as you think it is when applying specific fixes/patches and settings. I guess if I find it in the spring at the flea market or goodwill again I'll try that because the free download just dies.

Halo Wars is just about the only RTS that I ever got into. Its definitely worth it though. Check out some gameplay and give it a shot!
I am buying all Saturn games, PM me with your offerings and I will let you know if I need the game or not! (Everything must be CIB)
Currently trying to knock off all the sports games, would like to get them <$5 each! Of course if you would like to donate them I will gladly pay the shipping!

Insane I just found my C&C the First Decade CD. I swore this thing was tossed out. I'm thinking I may need to look into this community patch as I might get lucky.
Re: Recommend an RTS?
Just thought I'd drop in and say that I'll be keeping an eye on this thread and plan on playing some of these titles. I made a sort of gaming resolution to play more RTS titles this year.

I'm surprised, at least by the first few levels that C&C Generals isn't all that bad. It is odd seeing a world where the Chinese and US are allies against some terror organization backed by third world troublemakers if I remember that right. I think I took down like 4 or maybe 5 stages in China which is the starting campaign post-training. It's nice to play a C&C game where you can buffer building tasks as it means less babysitting. The three gorges dam stage was the last I finished and that was a pretty decent campaign but I fear it could get overwhelming when I pick it back up again.
Also on that disc was this screwy Renegades game too, C&C going first person shooter, it works and yet it doesn't considering some of it just seems too weird and the stages are really overly long to the point it like drags out.

Re: Recommend an RTS?

Renegade X is C&C Renegade done right, and it's free.
Btw nobody here plays Planetary Annihilation? It goes for dirt cheap during Steam sales.. But I find it overwhelming, since it involves spherical battlegrounds unlike TA's flat maps.
