Whoa.....I'd like to know more information about this method, since I just got into importing Super Famicom games (ok so I have just one at the moment, but it's a start).Ziggy587 wrote:
The only way I'm cool with repros these days is if a fan-translation is applied to the cart of the actual game. For example, taking a Seiken Densetsu 3 SFC cart and putting the Secret of Mana 2 English translation on it. Or taking a Final Fantasy V SFC cart and putting the FF5 English translation on it. In this case, they're not "repros". They're legit carts that were modified so that the game is in a different language than it original was. And in this case, I wouldn't be concerned about any copyright holder backlash.
The game has to remain in it's original SFC cart shell. Putting it inside an NTSC-U SNES shell means you're messing with another game. Also, the cart has to be made so that it can be restored to stock if wanted or need be. No cutting out mask ROMs, etc. This is what I mean by nondestructive.

The poll seems to be headed in a very obvious direction - no reproductions of expensive games that already are available, and Japanese/European games already in English. These are the two I would pick as well; we shouldn't allow sale of a game that alters a market.
I think you can make moral arguments against each option, but morality is ultimately subjective otherwise we wouldn't have a poll, and I'd be a hypocrite considering the video game vinyls project I've got going on. You could argue that even with translation, it is not IP owned by you. Star Fox 2? It wasn't released, but you still don't own it.
I enjoy buying English repros sometimes, but we really need to get some new shells made. I don't like the idea of destroying carts.

Re: Reproductions: What is our community ok with?
I'm in favour of reproducing or emulating any commercial game that is not available for purcharse. I see no ill in playing Propeller Arena or Armed Police Batrider without owning a real copy since the first wasn't ever released and the second was released exclusively for arcades 15 yers ago and won't be ever rereleased, they are not like Thief or Command and Conquer which are avilable both digitally and in their original form for a reasonable price.
If the game isn't commercially available I don't see ill on releasing hacks, translation patchs or fan mods either.
And if they are available, I see nothing wrong with someone buying an original copy to support the creators and then play pirated or hacked stuff. If you want to play a repro Earthbound on your SNES or Recca, it's fine by me as long as you buy the newly released version or any other as "proof of purcharse".
Basically, I'm fine with everything as long as it has an ethic behind it beyond "I'm too cheap to pay for my games".

I'd like to see a focus on producing new components. Virtually all original physical copies of these games are out of production, any copy altered is one less in the genuine market.
Lum fan.

it's an identical process as i understand it except that instead of a typical US SNES donor, you'd use the original JP SFC Cart and put the patch or mod onto that board. So you've got the original product with a modification instead of destroying one game to create another. it tends to be a bit more pricey, but in terms of legality there is probably a lot more ground to stand on.MyNameIsVince wrote:Whoa.....I'd like to know more information about this method, since I just got into importing Super Famicom games (ok so I have just one at the moment, but it's a start).Ziggy587 wrote:

If it is noted that it is a repro cart then i have no problem with it.
And like Stark said their should be an "all are ok"option

I actually got these from someone PCEFX forums a long while ago (3 years?) and was cleaning out my desk today and found them. I think there was a whole spindle full of them.Hobie-wan wrote:Someone make (another?) fake run with the dark blue being replaced with black?Stark wrote:Speaking of bootlegs look what I found today:
