Parents and banned video-game related stories?
Re: Parents and banned video-game related stories?
Never was restricted from any games/movies as far as I can remember. There was some issues with some games like Diablo or Grand Theft Auto, but I always ended up getting them anyway. My grandfather never really cared at all. I remember my grandmother getting pretty angry when she found out I was watching movies like Alien(s) with him. We would always play fighting games at the arcades, so violence was never a big concern. They also probably hoped I would learn something from the games and defend myself. I assume they didn't enjoy buying new glasses every couple months after a bully would break them...

Had to throw this memory in since it kinda sorta fits the topic.
The year is 1991, location is Hane's Mall in Winston Salem, NC. A young Luke musters up the courage to walk into TAPE WORLD and try to purchase Use Your Illusion 1 & 2, despite that it was one of the first "Parental Advisory" rated tapes and that I wasn't old enough. But I was about to be big time and wasn't scared.
That's right. I was about to be an eighth grader and knew no fear. I was about to be at the top of the middle school food chain and I wanted my friends to know that I owned the newest and baddest tapes around.
...so I chickened out. Sort of.
I told my Mom "It's not cool to have your Mom clinging to you at Tape World. Please just stay outside the store". I picked out the tapes (with those long ass plastic theft proof thingies), took them to them to the register, probably shaking like a fourteen year old trying to buy a Penthouse, and dropped down my seventeen dollars.
Two clerks, both rocker dudes. Dude one says "I can't sell you this". Dude 2 tells Dude 1 "Dude, G'n'r! Let the kid have it". I tell Dude one "There's my Mom outside the store. You can ask her! Please? I reall;y want this, g'n'r rocks!".
He sold the tapes to me and I was on cloud nine. That is, until I had to copy the tapes for every single one of my friends. And they all used those colored Memorex tapes that weren't long enough, so everyone got a tape that had a song that would cut off in the middle, and you'd have to flip the tape to hear the rest of it.
Kinda miss those Summer days of sitting around copying tapes, and trying to find the perfect time to "stop" a recording.
side note*I also fingered Jessica Howarth that same weekend, so that entire weekend was incredible.

It's so fun reading stuff like this. I love hearing how the generations before my time were exactly the same, but at the same time different. If you fast-forward a few years, it was basically the same stuff, but instead of crappy colored Memorex tapes, it was crappy colored Memorex CDs. My little brothers tell me that they still do stuff like that, but instead of CDs, they usually use their school flash drives.Luke wrote:He sold the tapes to me and I was on cloud nine. You say that like it's a bad thing.BoringSupreez wrote:Heck, I would have grown up as a Nintendo kid instead of a PC/Playstation kid.

From my perspective, it would be. I like GCN and Wii, but I wouldn't want to have grown up playing them instead. I'm sure you would say the exact opposite though. I don't think many people would want to change too much about their childhood once it's over. Even the bad experiences become part of who you are.Retrodude wrote:You say that like it's a bad thing.BoringSupreez wrote:Heck, I would have grown up as a Nintendo kid instead of a PC/Playstation kid.

Re: Parents and banned video-game related stories?
I've never had any games banned. When I was a kid I would play Resident Evil 4, Ninja Gaiden, Grand Theft Auto, Mortal Kombat, Doom, Halo, and Dead or Alive with my dad. I never had any nightmares or anything and my mom either didn't know or didn't care. I don't think she would care, but then again I've never really cared about most M-rated games.
As for internet usage, it was limited to one hour on weekdays in fifth grade, but that apparently stopped afterwards. She's never monitored what I was doing though.

Oh! I thought of one:
Remember that whole Pokemon is of the devil thing? I remember playing Blue in church when the preacher started talking about it. The reasons he gave were absolutely ridiculous. I continued to play, but scooted down in the pew so he couldn't see that I was playing on my Game Boy.
After church let out, some of the kids started making fun of me and telling me I shouldn't be playing a game made by the devil. At that point my grandmother was wondering if I should continue playing it or not. I remember pointing out how absolutely ridiculous it was. One of the points the preacher made was that Pokemon had "emon" in it. Ya'know, like d"emon". I then proceeded to ask if I should stop eating l"emons" too, because it had multiple "demons" in it. She called me a smart mouth, and then we never discussed it again.
I don't think she would have banned it anyway. After buying Red/Blue countless magazines, strategy guides, cards, VHS tapes, toys, etc etc, it would have been really dumb to throw all that stuff away just because our church said to do so.

I think the general line of thought is "I don't understand this, therefore it must be satan."jinx wrote:Oh! I thought of one:

I was never restricted from watching adult movies (R Rated) or playing adult games. I still remember being little and staying up late back when USA (the channel) had boob movies on late nights (Back on the "Up All Night" programming).

Here's one of the more infamous articles on the subject. Some of my favorite bits of their offered "evidence" include:jinx wrote:Oh! I thought of one:

"Only a demented mind, where Satan has robbed all value, except the value of wealth and mastery, could dream up such evil fantasy."
"It is the ultimate trip in Satan’s world of deception, paranormal powers, and the Luciferian dream of being the 'master.'"
"Meowth - This monster evolves into Persian, which has a Hindu identification mark on its forehead."
"Clefable can be taught 'new abilities with a TM or HM' (transcendental meditation)."
"Eevee is an ultimate demonic monster."
