Definitive ports of the Metal Slug games?
Re: Definitive ports of the Metal Slug games?
I've only played Metal Slug 3 on an MVS, and I do recall some slowdown. But as Dsh said, I'd love to also see a comparison video.
Re: Definitive ports of the Metal Slug games?
Let's be clear, I'm referring to input lag, not slowdown.foxhound1022 wrote:I disagree. There is/was lag when I played MS games in the arcade back when they were new.
Maybe the arcade you were playing was a bootleg. There are lots of boots out there that act out of whack.
I have every official MVS release and have played all the Metal Slugs on my CMVS and on my MVS and there is absolutely zero input lag in any metal slug game on official hardware.
Slowdown yes. Input lag, no.
The comparison would be very hard to see in a video. We're talking like differences in milliseconds. It's more evident when played, especially when critical jumps are being made.

Like I say, it's hard to see the input lag on the ps2, you feel it more than you see it.
Notice however on the MVS that you can see the response at the exact same moment that you hear the click of the microswitch. As soon as the button is pressed, the action is performed. There is zero input lag on MVS. On the PS2, notice that the button is released before the action is performed.
On the PS2 there is input lag. As mentioned, hard to see. But it is definitely felt. If you played a run of MS on the MVS, then after finishing went and played on the PS2, you'd be shocked.
I suppose what I should have done was added slow motion so that you could see the button released, then the bullet fire as opposed to the MVS... but eh it's already rendered and uploaded, and my upload is 760k which is such a pain

Re: Definitive ports of the Metal Slug games?
Okay so, let me get this straight...
In avoidance of Neo Geo hardware, here are the options of playing Metal Slug on other platforms.
Notes:
-There was slowdown on the original MVS/AES versions, but not input lag.
-I am preferably looking for versions with extras (combat school in MSX, fat island in MS3, etc.) & blood on.
-I currently own (household-wise):
-Metal Slug 1 (Wii VC)
-Metal Slug 3 (PS2)
-The only version of Metal Slug 2 to have "Combat School" is the Neo Geo CD version.
-I may avoid getting Anthology on account of its emulation, slowdown, lack of blood (?), input lag, bad controller options, lack of extras, etc.
-This may also go for SNK Collection (Wii) as even though there is no slowdown it's emulated, has 1 frame frameskip & may be missing extras.
-All of the single releases on PS2 (& assumedly Oxbox) are ports instead of emulation, and I would prefer ports.
Metal Slug 1 (PS1):
-Long load times mid-stage
-Extras:
-Combat School
-Another Story
Arguably good port
Metal Slug 1 (Saturn):
-No mid-stage loading
-Comes in two versions (One with bug fixes)
-Extras
-Combat School
-Lacks "Another Story"
Arguably definitive port for MS1 & superior to PS1.
Metal Slug X (PS1):
-Long load times mid-stage
-One of the few versions to keep Combat School
Arguably good port
Metal Slug 3 (PS2/Oxbox):
-Too hard*
Arguably definitive version (Smooth conversion & has extras).
Metal Slug 5 (PS2/Oxbox):
Arguably definitive port.
Metal Slug 6 (PS2/Oxbox):
Arguably definitive port.
*The PS2 version of Metal Slug 3 I recall had unlimited continues (or at least an option) and would tell you how many continues you used at the end.

N64/NES/FC/SNES/SFC/GB (SGB)/GBC (Black)(SGB)/FDS/Satellaview/Genesis/Mega Drive/Master System & maybe N64DD/GBC/GBA.

I think the Anthology versions do have the blood as an option, but I'm not certain.

Don't think so. unless its an unlockable feature.AppleQueso wrote:I think the Anthology versions do have the blood as an option, but I'm not certain.

Re: Definitive ports of the Metal Slug games?
I don't remember seeing a blood option, but the Wii anthology definitely has blood on by default.

is that not blood at the 1:00 mark in my PS2 video?CD AGES wrote:Don't think so. unless its an unlockable feature.AppleQueso wrote:I think the Anthology versions do have the blood as an option, but I'm not certain.

Re: Definitive ports of the Metal Slug games?
Ah, I misread it. I call slowdown in games "lag", just a force of habit.
But what everyone is referring to is a gap of time from when you try to perform an action, to when your character actually does it. My fault for not quite understanding properly.

Re: Definitive ports of the Metal Slug games?
The one good thing about Anthology is that you get Metal Slug 6 which was on the Atomiswave. I'm not aware of any standalone versions that include 6 except for Anthology.
I believe there are some Metal Slug titles on XBLA.
I did own Metal Slug XX and there was zero input lag. I know that Metal Slug 3 is on XBLA and maybe some others. There may or may not be input lag on those, don't know.

Re: Definitive ports of the Metal Slug games?
I don't have any input lag on my copy. I press a button, it happens immeadiatly. I don't understand your problem with it. And your video doesn't seem to show any lag, either. But part of your problem might be that you're using a PS1 controller on a PS2 game.dmike wrote:Let's be clear, I'm referring to input lag, not slowdown.foxhound1022 wrote:I disagree.
