Put another hour in. I'm in the Silo area, where you ride the little thingy on train tracks. (I'm obviously terrible at describing where I am). The monsters (monsters? Aliens? What are they?) I'm encountering are getting tougher now...
I just past that part and am at the giant fan (about 5 minutes past).
I am having trouble getting back up the ladder in time to pass that area. Tried it about 10 time and gave up for the night.
Blast Pit? You getting hit by the fan on the ladder?

Yeah. The Blast Pit, I'm stuck.

I normally dislike FPS, but this one is keeping me on the edge of my seat and has a different vibe than most... I am enjoying it.

It has a bit more of a survival horror vibe than most FPSs. There are games before and after that do that better, but Half-Life manages to tow the line between actiony/FPS vibe and scrounge/survive vibe pretty well.

I'm still not very far - I've got about 90 minutes in and am to the part where I'm first encountering the floor turrets. It is funny how much of this I remember even though it has been many years since I've played. That's the mark of great level design :)

Try crouching on the ladder while climbing and make sure you are centered on it. Any sort of variance to the side will result in you sticking out to far and getting killed. Once you are on top, jump off the ledge to fall onto the fan. Trust me.

Got it. Thanks!
Now it looks like I turned something on and am backtracking...
Lets hope this is right.

There will be a little backtracking here, yes, but only to the rocket test chamber with the creature in it. There is another door in there which you must go through to feed fuel to the test engine. Once you do, it's back to the test chamber's control room. After what occurs there, you'll be able to continue forward.

I'm at the tentacle part after the fan part that SB described. I've already
turned the power and fuel on
and am trying to sneak past him again but he keeps killing my ass. I'm not really sure how to get by him successfully.
