and I think a lot of bad dubs out there are more of a case of poor direction than poor actors.
...that does not excuse the fact that a bad dub is a bad dub. The reasoning is irrelevant.

Well no, of course not. I'm just saying that it's not necessarily a case of actors just being completely incompetent or not taking their jobs seriously.

Ever play a Shining game with English voice acting?

Not understanding the language definitely helps enjoyment in some ways, me thinks. Because while there are still annoying voices at times, it is harder for me to tell how well they are conveying emotions and such.

Honestly, I think it is often a case of poor casting, mediocre actors, and lack of time. Games like FFXIII, like em or not, most definitely get better quality dubs than games like Hyperdimension Neptunia.

But when all is said and done, I WANT the original audio. Honestly, dub only is what is stopping me from buying Atelier Ayesha. That sort of game just doesn't work with English, IMO. English actors do not have any idea how to portray the 'moe'-factor.
It irritates me that dual language tracks aren't a standard feature in rpgs yet, and Japanese games in general. It's 2013, we shouldn't still be having these kinds of discussions. Companies need to get their shit together. I'm playing Fire Emblem Awakening right now and it has every option imaginable, including dual language tracks. You want your dub. There it is. You want Japanese. There it is. Done and done.

Well is Fire Emblem really a good example? I mean they basically say "Huh?" or "What are you talking about" or "My liege". I mean not a lot of VA to re-do. Also you don't have the problem of the lip syncing stuff that Erik is talking about.

It basically is for new games. There are games here and there that come Eng dub-only still, but for the most part RPGs come dual audio. Many games come with several audio tracks even, I think Vanquish had like 5 or something. With re-releases it's a different story though.

I think generally that's what publishers try to do, but sometimes, especially in the case of smaller publishers, it's just not possible. Generally, space concerns and licensing issues with the Japanese language track (voice actors in Japan sometimes have some pretty crazy contracts) will prevent a US game from having that option.

'Course there's probably no excuse for really big publishers, but with the smaller guys there's generally a reason why they didn't include dual language, and it's not because they didn't want to include it.

Yeah, those are good points. Still bugs me though. I guess as a movie watcher I'm sort of used to most foreign films having the original language option with subtitles. So I sort of expect that from games too

Not that all game dubs suck, but I still feel more comfortable having the Japanese option available, in case it does. I always like having an authentic experience too, so Japanese is usually preferable to me

It's good that more newer titles are doing it though. I loved having the choice with Valkyria Chronicles and Fire Emblem Awakening as well...which is a pretty awesome game by the way.

I'd say a majority are still dub only. Any Atlus game is generally dub only. Tales of games are dub only. Final Fantasy games are dub only. Not sure about other Square Enix RPGs, as I do not play many anymore. But I would assume mostly dub only?

Probably totally wrong, but NIS America seems to be one of the few that often provides the original audio. I feel like XSEED probably does when they can too? But I can't remember and haven't played that many XSEED games.

Tecmo Koei made the latest Atelier game dub only... :( Otherwise I'd play it. Not that I won't play a dubbed game, but I won't play that series dubbed. The moe blob personalities just don't translate well to English.

Would definitely like to hear of more that are releasing with the original audio if you've got some suggestions. Mainly for PSP/PS Vita and DS/3DS. Though PS3, 360, Wii, Wii U, Dreamcast, PS2 are all alright too. :D
