Some game franchises should never change, there are tons of new games out there innovating. I'm not sure how i would feel if zelda turned into a FPS or a cart racer, if its not broke don't fix it. Majoras mask is the most innovative zelda game there was and it was also was one of the least popular.
Zelda uses the same framework to take the player to radically different worlds in each game. That's not stagnation; that's consistency. Call of Duty uses the same environments and literally identical gameplay for each game, which it turns out a new one of every single year. Each new CoD is essentially a $60 map pack.

that's not true at all. each features unique single player campaigns, which is the main draw for some of us. There's also lots of nuance across games in terms of gameplay. There are many new maps/environments each year.

Claiming every COD is a map pack is like claiming every Madden is a roster update. Both are erroneous claims usually made by someone who doesn't like the series/genre in the first place. There are good reasons to dislike both series, but yours isn't grounded in actual gameplay.

Call of Dookie as I call it...actually can we just rid the world of Activsion they're the perfect example of the Animal Farm effect. They became the very thing they rebelled against.

Also

Mario- Either do something innovative again or STOP
Zelda
Metroid
Kirby
Gears of War/Halo/Fable- Sony is making all sorts of awesomeness while those that just have an XBOX like me have no amazing exclusives to playfully rub in the faces of PS3 owners.
Resident Evil
Assassin's Creed
Final Fantasy

Is it just me, or does reviving a Franchise always end in fail?

So Madden isnt just an updated roster every year?, they actually find something non-gimmicky and innovative to put in each one every year?

Also CoD, I find it hard to believe people actually buy it for the single player! (i would, because fuck multi-player) i always just suspected people bought it, threw it in their Xbox's and hit the multi-player with totally ignoring the meat of the game!

Yes. I play madden and ncaa football every year. They add in features, update ai etc every year.

Those who don't play the games are the ones who call it a roster update.

I would go for a release every 2 years to cut down on bugs and have a more polished end product. Current gen games have become more complex and makes the 1 year windows tough. However it sells too well and the nfl requires a yearly release.

I'd argue that it is true. The foundations of the series haven't really changed. And while I have enjoyed the series for the first few installments, I realized that they all started to feel and play the same. In essence, there are a few things we could highlight.

I think it's where you place value on your money though. I understand people enjoy the storylines, but personally they're hardly worth $60 for a 5 hour experience. If you get enjoyment out of the multiplayer, then maybe you've gotten your dollar's worth.

But if you look at things like the intricacies of map design has so much influence. To me, this doesn't require much effort on the behalf of the designers, but could spell a huge difference between being a good map and a bad map. I'd be interested to hear how long an individual map takes to craft, test, and tweak.

Perks were a great introduction and offer a lot of flexibility and creative license on play-style, but now that the standard has been set it feels like Activision is having a hard time refining this idea.

And none of this detracts from the fact that they're decent, enjoyable games. I've enjoyed most of the series, with the exceptions being Black Ops and World at War. I'm saying including series like Gears and Assassin's tend to keep their formula but offer very little in refinements or new styles of play.

I guess I'm the only person who doesn't mind the Call of Duty series. I have fun playing them, especially with a big group of friends. I just wish World at War wasn't overrun with hackers ruining the game. I love World at War multiplayer...when it's not hacked.

I'd also say that the CoD games are no longer made by just one dev and each one has a distinctive style between the devs.
