You shouldn't die once in the first three levels, and with 1-ups you should be fine going into the factory level.
You should also be able to beat the elevator level without losing a life. Toss 'em off one by one. If in a bind in that level, use your police back up as you can't use it on the top floor.
I don't like to punch lock because it makes the game feel a bit dull, and my friend is a bit of an item hog. Also, we threw each other off the bridge stage more than is really necessary Even when we werent, he had a tendency of hitting me by accident.
In single player, I don't have any problems clearing the game without using a continue. 2 player tends to be a different story though.
Army Corps of Hell
Stage 4 is fucking bullshit. Lightning rods everywhere that one hit kill your minions and of course the stupid little fucks have to run right into them. Fuck that shit
Gravity Rush
Ridiculous controls. You want me to swipe my finger across the screen to dodge attacks? Are you game designers idiots? There's a reason the Vita has FUCKING BUTTONS ON IT!!!
Idiots
Oh, and I also got to this bullshit story level where I'm expected to make it across a field of large, projectile shooting enemies right after they stripped me of all my powers. Fuck you designers. I'm not jumping through your bullshit hoops for you
Maybe it's time I finally tried Persona 4 Golden

iOS port, anyone?
N64/NES/FC/SNES/SFC/GB (SGB)/GBC (Black)(SGB)/FDS/Satellaview/Genesis/Mega Drive/Master System & maybe N64DD/GBC/GBA.
I was knocking out games left and right this year, but after Ironsword I've hit a block. I believe I'm close to being able to beat Paperboy 2. I'm no where close to beating Bart vs. the space mutants, and the rest on my list will take some time.

How long is Star Tropics, anyway? I never got to spend much time with the first, but the second I ended up making it to the final boss years ago.
Stick with Star Tropics. It really is not that difficult, and - in my opinion at least - it is one of the best NES games. (Amazingly, it is even better than its sequel Zoda's Revenge.) I would very much like to see Nintendo revisit Star Tropics at some point, but I doubt it will ever happen. (A Wii version of the game that used motion controls for the yo-yo was a missed opportunity...) At the very least, I think that the protagonist (or villain) should appear in a Smash Bros. game.

It is not that long. Certainly, it is no longer than the original Legend of Zelda.
Definitely plan on playing Zoda's Revenge after completing Star Tropics.
Not sure if I'll invest the time into Bart Vs., as there is something about the game I just don't like. It's not a fun game, but something I plan on beating one of these days. Just not any day soon.
After Paperboy 2 and Infinite, I'll probably tackle Death & Return of Superman (snes) and Superman Returns (PS2). I've owned Returns for years and may have played it once.

Startropics took me about 8 hours. I didn't like it.
