Hardware specs say 512KB for CHR and PRG, so an absolute max ROM size of 1MB. The FF7 ROM is 2MB. So unless I'm missing something, it's simply impossible.

Anapan wrote:It's only $110 so I'm going to buy one. I wonder if it's be possible to have the cart autoboot a single rom? Getting a custom shell/label made would be a piece of cake vs trying to make a full repro board by reverse engineering...

IDK, that would be a $110 repro cart.

The FF7 cart has 5 ICs, overestimating the cost of them at $5 each would be $25. The FF7 cart makes 3v from the supplied 5v with resistors and/or diodes, but it would be better done with a voltage regulator. Figure you need 5 or 6 caps and maybe a resistor or two, that's only another ~$5. The PCB would be like $5-10 depending. A cloned lockout chip isn't need for FC, and not needed in the NES if you deactivate the lock, but if desired would only be a few bucks. The CR2032 can be had for cheap. NES cart shells can be had from Retro Zone for only $5 each. So a rough estimate would be like $50 in parts, and could be much less with quantity discounts.

If some one wanted to just make one for themselves, if the going price for an actual FF7 cart is $50 or less, it would be easier to just make it from that (assuming they could do it themselves and not have to pay some one to do it for them).

There's a new version that fixes issues with Nestopia, among other things.

Hey Ziggy, I'd buy a repro off you for $100 unless someone beats you to it :)

Makes me sad I don't have a better flash cart.

I have a SNES flash cart from Tototek, and I got it back when it was the only SNES flash cart available. It works great, but it'll only hold a max of four games at once, can only hold one SRAM save at once, and has to be flashed with a programmer via a parallel port. So every time I wanna play a different game on my flash cart, I have to go into the basement (where I keep my old computer with a parallel port) to flash it. Which is nuts when you consider that all you have to do with these newer flash carts is just put the ROM on an SD card and pop it in. AND all your games and saves stay on the SD card, you don't have to over write them every time you wanna play a new game.

The SNES Everdrive is affordable at ~$80, but since the Sd2snes exists, I'd rather just get that. But it's like $200! Peas and rice! I got the idea to sell my copies of Mega Man X2 and X3 (being that I never play them and would be able to play them on the Sd2snes), then use that money to fund the purchase of the Sd2snes, but I guess I've just been too lazy to get on that.

So a lot of these cool looking hacks go unplayed by me.

Holy crap, both that rom hack, and the SD2snes look amazing. I was perfectly happy with the SNES PowerPak, and now I find out that I could have something that much better?

Hey Ziggy, do you want a used Powerpak at a great price?

Depends what a "great price" is.
