You guys keep blaming the union, but keep in mind that the higher-ups were also problematic. Their CEO left with a two million dollar severence package, and they hired someone new at three times the pay. Additionally, four top executives at Hostess received 80% pay increases. Millions of dollars that couldn't be spared on workers were certainly being paid to fatten execs.

Add that to the list of people in this thread and elsewhere saying that Hostess products suck now and they haven't eaten them in years, and I don't think you can simply blame this all on the teamsters, even if they did play a part.

I apologize if I was unclear. I think that the responsibility for Hostess's bankruptcy falls squarely on the management. Other companies have successfully negotiated their pension obligations, and - if I understand the situation correctly - the union had already accepted major cuts to its members benefits in the last few years.

I was merely wondering if the union - realizing that the company was essentially dead in the water - used the strike as a means to bring about its bankruptcy sooner rather than later (i.e., before management had the opportunity to raid the company's assets). Doing so might have been very advantageous for the union and its members, and - if that is the case - I cannot blame them for doing so. (I have not been following the story this closely, but I have not heard reports of union members that were actually upset when the company folded.)
