Hell the fact that people have meltdowns over games getting unfavorable scores before those games are even out suggests to me that a significant portion of gamers only look at scores and read reviews to validate opinions they've already made up their mind about.
Even when I was a kid I use to look up reviews. I didn't know wtf they were talking about but I knew that the higher the number, the better the game. People obviously look at reviews otherwise how would all these people be in business? They might not read them but they definitely google things like '<insert name> IGN review' to see what rating it got.
You don't need everybody to read reviews to be profitable. You just need enough.
The average gamer probably doesn't play obscure Japanese RPGs but the developers and publishers of games like those are still in business.

Not super interested in this series anymore, but I'll check out some videos and reviews. May end up picking it up if I ever decide I want to go pedestrian bowling again.

It seems to have improved from what I've seen but I wouldn't spend a penny over $30 on it. Especially considering the pile of games I've (as with a lot of people here) bought and still haven't gotten to play.

Well after playing GTA V all night I can honestly say it has lived up to the hype. Seriously jawdropping, I can't belive they got this to run on the ps3 and xbox 360. Rockstar really knows how to push a system to it's limit, just like in san andreas on the PS2. I cant even Imagine what GTA VI will look like on next gen systems. I feel like they really listened to the complaints of GTA IV and fixed them all in V.

With GTA San Andreas, you had the core GTA experience, but it was bogged down with turf wars and managing your gang, which felt clunky and outside of the normal GTA experience and it was required. With GTA IV, the constant phone calls may not be required, but they interrupt you and break your concentration. It sets you outside of your goals and what you want to accomplish in an attempt to bring you into an activity that may not be your thing.
It would be better to just say, "Hey you can use your phone to contact your friend and play darts, or go bowling... use it when you want to." instead of forcing you into acknowledging that feature.
You hit the nail on the head. This is why I stopped playing GTA SA and didn't play GTA 4 much at all.
San Andreas was fun...until the gang wars/turf stuff. I would be in the middle of doing something and then get the "Your turf is under attack" or something like that. So I felt obligated to drop what I was doing and go defend it. I felt like I couldn't get anything done because I had to defend my turf. I could have ignored it I guess, but I felt obligated to defend it. This burned me out on the game.
GTA 3 and Vice City are still the best IMO. Haven't played 5 yet (plan on buying it today).
GTA is the Scarface of videogames. It parodies the decadence, apathy and much of what plagues modern societies, but the effect is lost on the target audience, especially younger players (who shouldn't be playing this if they had better-than-walking-faeces for parents). Rockstar revels in the controversy and free advertisement. They're masters of their domain, even in their DMA days.
That said, I don't understand their attempts to censor spoilers for GTAV; their stories are straight rip-offs from famous crime movies.

It's why games like the Saint's Row series interests me more, as it started out as a copy and now parodies the decadence, apathy, and the problems of the Grand Theft Auto series.
Anybody else plan to pick up the GATV DLC for Saint's Row IV?

I agree with most of this except for assuming a parent is a POS if they let their kid play a GTA game. There are adults who can't process some things, age isn't always an indicator. I was able to play whatever when I was a kid and knew the difference between game world real world. Some kids shouldn't play it, but I would say it is a case by case basis.
