I second Troll 2 as an adorably terrible movie. I actually enjoyed it quite a bit mroe after watching the documentary "Best Worst Movie", however. Once you have a little background on the film - and the people involved with it - it takes on the qualities of a really bad film made by people you know

...which only adds to the viewing experience.

When I was an MA student I wrote about The Others for a paper in a "Rhetoric of Horror Film" class I took (best class ever, by the way!). The paper was very well received on the three occasions I had to present it.

I really should work up another scholarly essay on a horror film in the future. Maybe I'll find the right inspiration this month.

Incidentally, here are links to books by the prof who taught the class. The horror books in particular are AMAZING and I am sure any of you would find something to enjoy therein:

my second movie of the month was a regrettable choice:

I really liked the first one, but this just plain sucks. These found footage style films are growing tiresome for me, and this has got to be the worst one I've seen. It just feels forced. I find myself thinking "put that fucking camera down you idiot, there are zombies attacking" for most of the movie. Also, I fell asleep 3/4's of the way in so I don't know how it ends, and really don't care. :|

next up: Black Sheep! (not spade/farley)

This was the first exploitation film I saw (I was 14 when I watched it) and overall... I have the same feelings about it: Confusion and frustration. The serious stuff is extremely disturbing, bleak and graphic while the comedy ruins the entire thing since it's awful and it's spliced in the worst possible moments. At least the Blu-Ray looks good and offers tons of extras and some distressing deleted scenes.

Cabin in the Woods

I have but one word to say: Sweeeeeeet

Okay, I lied. I have more to say, I just wanted to get that out of the way first. Since a lot of you have put this movie on your respective lists, I'm going to post some of my thoughts while watching the movie behind a spoiler tag, since I don't know who among you has already seen it or not.

These were some of my initial thoughts, as best as I can make out from my hectic handwriting, while watching the movie (with a couple images thrown in for good measure):

Awful lot of sacrifice images. Wonder what thats-.....Ooooooh~....Gotcha.

Well, at least he was nice enough to not openly gawk at her lack of pants.

It's Cheech and Chong's gringo cousin

Most awesome-est bong I've ever seen (and I don't even smoke).

*"Gas Station"* F*&% the cousin. I'd go to a hotel.

Hey Thor, you're supposed to punch guys who blatantly insult your girlfriend.

Poor bird.

I refuse to stay in any house with a wolf's head on the wall.

Image
First the painting, then this? Who the hell are this guy's cousins?

Yeah, a wind did it. Riiiiiight.

Image
I would have been so royally f&*%*$ if I'd found that room. There would have been at least 15 different things chasing my ass.

Why is the most logical person in the room the pothead?

Never speak languages you don't understand. Ever.

Zombies!! :D ............Oh, excuse me. Redneck Zombies

*horney teens* So much for them.

Saw=ick

Image
That's the cutest little exorcism I've ever seen >_<

Damn Curt and his cheap scare!

I knew that was the most awesome-est bong ever! :D

*Curt on Dirtbike* Bon voyage *waves at screen*

How long is he going to throw her around the dock?

First movie where pothead survives?

Dang! Just look at all of them!

Is that the omnipotent voice of Sigourney Weaver

Kick. A$$. Snake.

*Unicorn* Foul! Foul! I remember nothing like that from my books.

Mermaid

Is that Cthulhu (<---I spelled that horribly wrong in my notes) or something?

It is Sigourney Weaver! :D

Oh, just shoot him.

Aw, don't end it there. At least show me the rest of it

There's more, but I was scribbling so fast I can't read it

Overall, I was very impressed by it. It's just plain fun. And while it is a horror movie, at the same time the plot is also allegorical, sophisticated and satirical, and the dialogue is well written, with appropriate jabs at aspects of our pop culture. Plus, I really like the discussion of free will. Outside powers almost joyfully insisting that they're not interfering with free will, yet at the same time doing everything they can to manipulate the outcome when their carfully laid plans go awry.

The only real issue I had with the movie were certain scenes involving CGI.

Like this one:

Also, the bird and RV scene.

Compared to the rest of the movie, I just thought they were sub-par. Especially after getting to the end and seeing what all they had in those cubes. I suppose I shouldn't complain though, since it seems they at least they spent their money and efforts on the good stuff.

I also had a couple questions regarding the plot:
Like at the end when everyone was all gung-ho about shooting Marty. If shooting them was an option, why not just trap everyone in the cabin then systematically take them out one buy one with a gun? Or a knife even? That's how your ancestors did it, after all. It just seems like a much more reliable method than betting your chips that a bunch of mythological creatures are going to do the job. Especially when it seems to be so easy for a classroom full of 9-year old girls to turn your demonic spirit into a frog with nothing more than a shinto ritual.

But overall, those are minor gripes that don't really take away from an excellent and witty horror film in an era of increasing remakes and sequels. A definite recommendation to anyone who might still be on the fence about it.

THE LAST MAN ON EARTH

So I've finally see the last of the three major films based on Richard Matheson's I Am Legend (The Last Man on Earth, The Omega Man, and I Am Legend. I don't count that crappy I Am Omega from The Asylum, because it's sole purpose was to be a shitty knock off of I Am Legend to confuse grandmothers and those who don't really pay much attention to what film they're watching so that the company could make money. I feel The Asylum and its staff should all go die in a fire).

Of the three, I enjoyed this one the most for its acting, though in terms of my feelings for it...well, Charlton Heston's battle against nuclear mutants in Omega Man is tough to put down. But as far as performances go, Vincent Price really shines in this film. The tone of this movie is darker than either of the later productions, and there are some moments and lines I found downright chilling. But Vincent Price's expressions, his fear and paranoia versus his boredom...he does a great job.

The film does have some problems, such as its terrible dubbing. Vincent Price seems to be the only character whose mouth matches what he's saying the whole time.

It's not my favorite performance of Price. I'm not gonna lie, I enjoy seeing him play the villain, and he does so perfectly in Witchfinder General. But he still excels here, over both Charlton Heston and Will Smith.

Oh, yes. Very much so.

Even though I was mildly irked by the abruptness of the ending...
More! More! At least show me the face, damn it!

the ending was the only that pissed me off:

It should have been a tentacle, not a hand!!!

...but what a brilliant movie.
