It is an interesting prospect. My pipedream for it would be it being modded to have SATA headers and rails so you mount some harddrives inside of it. That way you can use it as a proper HTPC. As it is right now I am interested but hesitant. I can see it as a nice low impact netflix and skype box more than I can see it for gaming. But having an HDMI emulation box that works similar to my Wii is very appealing.

My interest in this thing just went up exponentially. Why? It was just announced that XBMC would be released for Android. To follow up on fastbilly's comment, If you can install it onto the Ouya, and maybe incorporate that SATA mod, you have a $100 HTPC that doubles as a gaming system. Pretty sweet, if you ask me! :)

Theres really no information on the thing, if it's open source can't we just run free emulators on it or just pirate every game? I also don't want to play android games on my tv. I dont even want to play crappy android games on my phone.

I looked at the contributors on the kick starter though and they have two developer packages that cost over $600. Each one at least 200 people payed for. That means there at least 400 develepors on board so maybe it'll have some good exclusive games.

You know, I'll admit that if I didn't develop ios games, I wouldn't even have an ipod touch, or be going out of my way to get a device like that just for the games, but the way a large percentage refers to them as "crappy android games" or "crappy iphone games" is a pretty broad insult. There are a lot of really clever and high quality games for those platforms.

This. Smartphones are a legitimate platform for video games. There have been tons of high-quality smartphone games made in the past couple years. Moreover, it has sparked an indie game renaissance, which I think we can all be thankful for.

There are two major components to their product. The hardware itself is one, and that's what they hold up as hackable. The second is their front end/client, which looks to be a closed system.

Kinda like if you've got a PC, you can overclock it, boot multiple OSes, swap hardware, install all sorts of other crap, and it doesn't prevent you from accessing Steam.

iOS/Android games have had some interesting titles. They're capable enough platforms in general. The directions that many games on the platforms have gone have more to do with the typical devices and markets than capabilities. The Ouya gives a hardware config to target that isn't a tiny-screened touch device, which may prompt different games.

I'm not really familiar with kickstarter... Is there any type of guarantee keeping the person/people/company to put out a product? Or could they take the money and run? Is the total funding taxed?

As an Android developer, I fully support this. Let's make this happen ;)

Not sure about taxes, as now we're in to the law around investment. The only guarantee is the fact that backers can pursue legal action if the product is not put out, and I believe Kickstarter would help facilitate that by providing relevant contact info.

I thought a lot of the indie resurgence came from xbla, psn, and steam...

The general dislike for smartphones games I see and an opinion I share is that the controls suck. I hate trying to play games on my phone.
